Suicide Squad director David Ayer has confirmed there's a deeper meaning behind the Joker's "Damaged" tattoo, which has garnered much criticism in the past.
A Twitter user posted a theory involving the tattoo, writing, "I think the damaged tattoo is actually pretty ingenious, but only for those who understand. Joker got the tattoo because batman damaged his smile in a failed attempt at revenge for killing Robin. All with the intent to antagonize and infuriate Batman simply by seeing his face." Ayer would later confirm this theory by tweeting, "Exactly."
2016's Suicide Squad introduced an ensemble of new characters to the DC Extended Universe, including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Amanda Waller and many more. The film also featured Jared Leto's first appearance as the Clown Prince of Crime, and seemingly his last. In fact, there are no official plans for Leto's Joker to appear in any future DCEU movies, including James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

The film arrives in theaters Aug. 6, 2021.
