Director David Ayer denied rumors that a director's cut of his film Suicide Squad would be coming to HBO Max.The publication circulating this rumor -- Small Screen, a UK-based media outlet -- claims to have multiple sources that "confirm" an Ayer Cut of the film will be arriving on the streaming service either in 2021 or 2022. When asked by a Twitter user if he could comment on this rumor and offer some clarity, Ayer simply responded, "Not true."

Small Screen ultimately responded to Ayer's Tweet, doubling down on the reliability of its sources. "Again, we trust our sources and are standing by them," the publication stated. Which part of the rumor is untrue, however, remains unclear.

Ayer confirmed via Twitter in July that his cut of the film definitely exists, but the rights to it are owned by AT&T/HBO Max. No further details have been shared with the public regarding this. If an Ayer Cut came to the surface, then it likely would appear on HBO Max. In the past, Ayer has been open about the existence of a Suicide Squad director's cut, regularly sharing details with fans regarding his version of the film, as well as his general disapproval of the theatrical release.

Along with his openness about the cut’s existence, it is no secret that Ayer wasn't necessarily happy with the final cut of Suicide Squad, commenting on Twitter in May that his "soulful drama was beaten into a comedy." He has also claimed that his director’s cut is "simply better than what the public has seen" and that it would ultimately "make sense to update it." Ayer even shared a description of his original opening scene in September, which apparently featured June Moon releasing Enchantress, an extensive assault on Arkham Asylum by the Joker and his crew and an argument between Harley Quinn and the Joker in his car.

Suicide Squad was the third film installment in the DC Extended Universe. Though it was relatively well-received by audiences, it was slammed by critics. James Gunn, who will be directing the film's sequel, The Suicide Squad, recently praised Ayer’s film in an interview with Empire.

"I know it didn't come out how David wanted it to come out. But he did one really, really great thing, and that is he picked fantastic actors to work with, and he dealt with these actors in building their characters in a really deep and fearless way," said Gunn. "It's something David definitely deserves to be lauded for, and it's definitely added to this movie."

Written and directed by Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Steve Agee as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters Aug. 6, 2021.
