There were a number of flaws that made 2016's Suicide Squad unpalatable for critics and a large portion of the audience. Reviews commonly cited thinly written characters among a host of other criticisms. Director David Ayer himself seems to agree, particularly when it comes to Harley Quinn. However, he recently suggested that the fault was not entirely his own.A fan took to tweeting at the director about Suicide Squad, complaining that Harley was oversexualized and not developed enough as a character in comparison to her depiction in Birds of Prey. Ayer then revealed in response, "Sadly her story arc was eviscerated. It was her movie in so many ways. Look I tried," going on to explain that he had created a comics-accurate character. He then added, "Everything is political now. Everything," though did not provide more detail on what this was in reference to. Ayer simply concluded, "I just want to entertain. I will do better."RELATED: The Suicide Squad Is Still on Schedule Despite COVID-19

Despite criticism concerning Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, the character quickly became a fan-favorite -- due, in part, to the performance of Margot Robbie -- leading to the character's substantial role in Birds of Prey, much of which revolved around the eccentric villain and antihero.

The character will return once again in James Gunn's standalone sequel, The Suicide Squad, likely playing a more substantial role than in her debut film. However, while the film is currently in post-production, details on the sequel are currently scarce.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Joaquin Cosio, Nathan Fillion, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Idris Elba and Michael Rooker.
