News is starting to pour in about James Gunn's The Suicide Squad 2 as it prepares to begin production. The news that Gunn would take over the DC franchise following his controversial firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a shock to many. Of course, now that Gunn is back in the director's chair of Guardians 3, he'll be in charge of two very unusual comic book teams.

Looking to distance this new film from the much-maligned first film, Gunn looks to be embracing some of the more unusual DC villains to fill out the roster. One particularly interesting choice is Polka-Dot Man, an often-mocked Batman villain who is as ridiculous as he sounds. So, before he gets his surprising big screen debut, here's everything you need to know about Polka-Dot Man.

10 His Origins

Despite never making it as one of Batman's main foes, Polka-Dot Man has been around for quite some time. He made his debut in Detective Comics #300 in 1962, and has continued to appear on-and-off since then.

He doesn't have much in the way of an origin story, aside from the fact that his real name is Abner Krill. He decided on a life of crime and inexplicably chose dot-themed capers as his signature. He is mostly depicted as a petty criminal, even shown stealing money from gumball machines.

9 That Costume

Certainly, the thing that stands out the most with Polka-Dot Man is that ridiculous costume. He dons white tights which are covered in colorful polka-dots, making him a visually laughable villain.

As stupid as the look is, it does have some practical use. Through some unknown means, Krill developed the suits which allows him to remove the dots then turn into some sort of weapon or method of escape. While that helps to explain the look a bit, we still say that it's not worth being seen as the laughing stock of Gotham's criminal underworld.

8 His Powers And Abilities

Krill has proven to be a pretty pathetic fighter when it comes to one-on-one combat, relying solely on his ridiculous dots to battle Batman and Robin. And while they are easy to mock, the dots at least carry some useful abilities.

Using a special belt that controls all the dots on his costume, Krill has the ability to create buzzsaw dots, solar flare dots and punching dots. Not surprisingly, most of his dots are designed for fleeing rather than fighting, including a teleportation dot as well as a flying saucer dot and a floating bubble dot, to make his look even more lame.

7 Dots Are Also His Downfall

It's unclear where Krill's obsession with dots comes from, or why he insists on using them in his career as a small-time criminal. In a sad and ironic twist, Polka-Dot Man's love of polka-dots is often what gets him caught by the caped crusaders.

In one rare instance when Polka-Dot Man got the drop on the heroes, he captured Robin and made him write a message to Batman, luring him into a trap. But Krill failed to notice Robin adding braille dots to the message, warning Batman. In another failure, Batman deciphered that Polka-Dot Man's crime spree formed a connect-the-dots map, leading him right to the criminal's next heist.

6 He's Obsessed With His Public Image

As evidenced by his distinct look, Polka-Dot Man is not interested in keeping a low profile. Despite being an incompetent criminal who barely makes Batman break a sweat, Polka-Dot Man is obsessed with being recognized as a big-time criminal.

He is renowned among other villains for boasting about his latest run-in with Batman, and is constantly worrying about how he is perceived by the public. Needless to say, he is often disappointed with how big of a joke the world considers him.

5 He Suffered A Breakdown

After several years struggling to make a name for himself as a criminal, Krill fell on hard times. No longer able to use his suit, he tried to remain a threat to Gotham by wielding a baseball bat and continuing to commit small-time robberies.

After injuring a policeman, Krill was severely beaten by Detective Harvey Bullock. The physical injury coupled with another embarrassing failure sent Krill into a downward spiral where he developed a drinking problem. It'll be interesting to see if the movie chooses to deal with his part of the character's past.

4 He Quit His Life Of Crime For A While

While Polka-Dot Man is clearly a ridiculous villain, we have to give him credit for the fact that he eventually recognized his second-rate status as a bad guy.

While Polka-Dot Man continued to try and make a name for himself in Gotham, the rise of more violent and deranged villains made him realize he was not cut out for this line of work after all. Knowing he could never compete with the likes of the Joker, Polka-Dot Man hung up his ridiculous costume and called it quits.

3 He's Very Insecure

From the sounds of the early character descriptions, Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad might be a little bit different from the comics. His powers do still stem from polka-dots that can become weapons, but it sounds like those dots will be on his body rather than a costume. Because of this, it seems like he’ll be somewhat embarrassed by his super abilities.

James Gunn has shown that his irreverent humor can fit extremely well into a comic book film. No doubt he'll have a lot of fun with a supervillain who has a lot of insecurities.

2 His Unfortunate Death

Despite making his big screen debut in The Suicide Squad 2, Polka-Dot Man was never a member of that comic book team. To be fair, he wouldn't be many people’s first choice to add to their squad, but he was recruited for one ill-fated group of super villains.

General Immortus put together a group of second-rate baddies to do his bidding, including Polka-Dot Man. However, he and most of the team were killed off quite quickly. We wonder if a similar fate awaits the new cinematic Polka-Dot Man.

1 David Dastmalchian Will Play Him

David Dastmalchian

James Gunn has shown he has a good eye for casting, bringing in unlikely and little-known actors like Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff for the Guardians movies. For The Suicide Squad, Gunn looks to be continuing his trend of going for more obscure actors, with David Dastmalchian taking the role of Polka-Dot Man.

Dastmalchian is no stranger to the comic book world, having played a memorable role as one of Joker's henchmen in The Dark Knight and one of the oblivious members of Scott Lang’s crew in the Ant-Man movies. It'll be great to see how he handles his biggest role to date.
