Variety reporter Justin Kroll wrote on Twitter that, between the high quality of writer Christina Hodson's Birds of Prey script and a desire to use the film to introduce Batgirl to the DC Extended Universe, the studio will likely shuffle the planned production schedule, moving Suicide Squad 2 from its expected late-2018 start.
As for SUICIDE SQUAD 2, clearly moving out of 2018 shoot. The move to go with BOP not only had a lot to do with Hodson's script but also the idea of doing with BATGIRL what Marvel did with Black Panther in CIVIL WAR by introducing them into universe before giving them own film— Justin Kroll (@krolljvar) April 17, 2018
Although there has been some question in recent weeks as to whether the film in production is Birds of Prey or Gotham City Sirens, it’s clear that Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie will lead the film regardless. However, considering a recent report claiming that Gotham City Sirens has been put on hold, it seems likely that the film will follow the Birds of Prey.
Suicide Squad 2 was initially slated to begin production this fall. Gavin O’Connor will direct the film, which is expected to see the return of Will Smith, Robbie, Jared Leto and Viola Davis, among others. It’s also been rumored that Dwayne Johnson will debut as Black Adam in the film.
Hodson is also set to write the Batgirl film following the abrupt departure of Avengers director Joss Whedon in February.
Although the start date unknown, Birds of Prey could begin filming by the end of this year or early 2019.
