A previously “untold” tale of Deadpool’s past is about to come to light — in a truly unusual manner! Sure, the Merc with a Mouth has had plenty of annuals before (shout out to “Daredevil/Deadpool Annual” ’97!), but September’s “Deadpool Annual” #1 will be an annual unlike any other! The issue will feature the “failed pilot” for the non-existent ’80s animated “Deadpool” series, complete with illustrations mimicking the look of the real “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends” cartoon.
Illustrator Scott Koblish spoke about the “Deadpool Annual” during a panel at Comic-Con International. “It’s ‘Deadpool and his Insufferable Pals,'” said Koblish. “All the expectations you’d have about watching a 1983 cartoon, the villains have expectations about how they’d be treated but they aren’t treated that way by Deadpool.” Koblish changed his art style for the issue, which will also feature the Sinister Six. “I thought I could draw it kind of straight, or I could draw it like a 1980’s cartoon,” said Koblish, noting that he intentionally drew things “wrong” and “clumsily.”
Next week we’re switching things up at X-POSITION and talking to many of the minds behind “Deadpool Annual” #1, including writer Gerry Duggan, artist Scott Koblish, editor Jordan D. White and more. Have a question about how this wacky issue was made or what to expect when Deadpool goes “animated”? Send it in via an e-mail with the subject line “X-Position” or leave a comment in the CBR Community thread. But get ’em in quickly because the deadline’s Friday! Make it happen!
And for more questions inspiration, here’s the solicit info for the issue!
