We've seen giant-robot devotees in China construct life-size Transformers out of car parts, but now one college student has built an enormous Gundam from wood.

The 21.6-foot replica of the titular mecha from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is a year-long project undertaken in Shandong Province, in eastern China, by a graduate of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

Weighing in at about 1 ton, the 1/3-scale statue is made from a wooden framework covered in varnish and waterproof paint. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,500 bolts hold everything together.

According to Crunchyroll, the student said he spent about six hours each day on the replica, braving all kinds of weather. He also nearly injured himself in a fall from a roof while assembling the Gundam.
