When thinking of powerful Marvel characters, Thor always comes to mind. While several individuals have become Thor, only a few have transcended the already incredible power set afforded to them, into even greater power sets. One of these individuals was Eric Masterson, also known as Thunderstrike, who would become so powerful that he could dispatch the Avengers on his own.

The defining factor in his incredible jolt in power was the implementation of not one, but two powerful magic weapons. While he already had his powerful mace, Thunderstrike, he also once wielded the corrupt and bloodthirsty Bloodaxe. The sheer amount of power within the weapons drove the hero to succumb to evil, culminating in him perishing. So, how did it all happen and what drove Masterson to take up the intense Bloodaxe in unison with his own legendary weapon?

Thunderstrike came into possession of the Bloodaxe, which first belonged to Skurge of Asgard, under unfortunate circumstances. A vigilante wielding the axe appeared and clashed with Masterson a few times, before it was revealed to be none other than his girlfriend Jackie Lukus. The weapon, long corrupted by the evil of its original owner, had infected Jackie. However, Eric was able to save her from its influence, taking up the Bloodaxe himself. He used the immense power the dual-wielded weapons afforded him to take on the evil Serpent God of Death, Seth. Possessed by the evil he was exposed to and the raw power it came with, Eric was able to sacrifice himself to purge the evil from his body and stop the potential destruction he may have wrought.

At the height of his bloodthirsty state, Masterson was an uncontrollable engine of destruction, similar to that of War Thor. What made him more volatile than War Thor, is the multiplied power of having more than one magical armament. Giving himself over to the power completely saw him reach levels more akin to that of Cosmic Thor or even Old King Thor. Although we have seen multiple magical weapons in the MCU, they've either been used together in short windows by Thor or shared with Captain America. The full extent of two Asgardian artifacts working full bore with maximum proficiency is yet to be seen.

It's unlikely we'll see the Thunderstrike mace any time soon, given that Thunderstrike isn't part of the MCU. However, the original owner of the deadly Bloodaxe, Skurge, was in Thor: Ragnarok. He does indeed have an axe, with the potential to be the very Bloodaxe he's famed for in the comics, though chances are slim. The reason it's not likely is down to the fact that the Bloodaxe in the comics is powered by the evil instilled in it and Skurge in the MCU did not display the level of ruthlessness his comic counterpart does. If anything, he reluctantly followed Hela out of self-preservation rather than a delight for evil.

As Thor's saga in the MCU continues in Thor: Love and Thunder, he will likely encounter bigger and badder enemies than ever before. These new threat levels will require new approaches, more power, and powerful allies. Perhaps an analog to the Bloodaxe will appear, corrupted by someone other than Skurge. The Odinson may have to call upon the dark powers of the artifact to take on a foe unlike any other he has faced. Infamous rivals like Gorr come to mind when considering just how dangerous a foe has to be before Thor is willing to give in to the Bloodaxe to defeat them.
