The original Streets of Rage debuted on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991 and was an immediate success both critically and commercially helping popularize side-scrolling beat'em-ups on home consoles after years of the genre being largely relegated to arcades. The video game went on to receive direct sequels on the Genesis in 1992 and 1994 while a whole subgenre of derivative titles was inspired by the franchise.

The upcoming sequel features highly detailed hand-drawn sprites while taking advantage of the technological advances in the subsequent two decades with original protagonists Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding back in action. While the visual design and soundtrack are both unabashedly nods to the 90s era from which the franchise first launched, Streets of Rage 4 looks like to be love letter to the original trilogy that can be enjoyed by fans and newcomers alike.
