Indie-darling Stray has already achieved what many AAA games can only dream of without sprawling open world or a ludicrously hefty budget. It has shown that niche concepts have the potential to entice players with their uniqueness almost instantly, even if their appeal often comes as a double-edged sword. Fortunately for Annapurna Interactive and BlueTwelve Studio, Stray’s adorable protagonist only ever evokes feelings of warmth and comfort, which can be further bolstered with the help of mods that make the game even cuter.

Shortly after the game was released, the modding community rolled up its sleeves and started working on bringing the gameplay experience to new heights. While some mods improve Stray's general performance or address its visual delivery, others cater to the feline's innate qualities of being endearing and turn them up to eleven. If cat enthusiasts are looking for new ways to make their heroic protagonist even more dapper and sublime, the following five mods ought to do the trick.

Pick of the Litter Stays True to Its Name

While there is nothing wrong with ginger tabby cats whose fur color is indicative of their nature, some players might be drawn to the idea of partial customization. Unfortunately, the vanilla version of the game does not allow players to alter the protagonist's physical appearance, which is where "Pick of the Litter" comes into play.

By and large, the mod contains hand-painted (alternate) textures for the lead fuzzball. Components that address the color of eyes and whiskers are global, which is to say that they also affect the appearance of non-player felines. While the creator of the mod plans on introducing more features further down the line, "Pick of the Litter" acts as a standalone expansion. For players interested in a more thorough approach, taking a gander at "Cat Customization" might be worth the time.

Siamese Cat's Appeal Lies In Its Presentation and Eyes

If tinkering with multiple retextures or built-from-scratch presets is not to players' liking, downloading a mod with pre-tweaked parameters is always a viable option. With several eye-catching fur recolors to choose from, the one that stands out the most is the "Siamese Cat" mod, whose true-to-life presentation and captivating blue eyes are textbook examples of cream of the crop.

Since applying the mod is as easy as extracting its contents to the game installation folder, players should be able to transform the four-legged orange protagonist into a bewitching Siamese cat in seconds. Fashion-conscious feline aficionados will also notice that this fur retexture complements the outline of B-12's backpack, which further adds to the mod's general appeal.

Glasses Add a Touch of Realism

As players explore the secrets of the walled city and uncover the disaster that led to its downfall, they will notice that most of its inhabitants have a strong tendency to express their character through clothing preferences. Thanks to the craftiness of the modding community, the intrepid kitty can don a few stylish pieces as well.

Generally speaking, the "Glasses" mod not only makes the protagonist appear well-read but also conscious of the dangers that come with the emission of blue light. With the amount of technology present in the long-forgotten city, it feels almost natural to equip a pair of eyeglasses, just in case there is more to those technological marvels than meets the eye.

Eyepatch Captures the Untold Story

Although there is hardly any room for a pirate's life inside the walled city, it does not mean that garments associated with the lifestyle would feel out of place. In fact, the unusual circumstances play into the idea of the protagonist being a seasoned scallywag, which makes the "Eyepatch" mod a welcome addition.

Players who are not particularly fond of the fierce furball sporting round glasses can opt to wear an eyepatch instead. While this sassy accessory will make the protagonist exude an aura of solemn authority, it will not give the feline an edge over enemies nor add to their ability to keep a low profile. It does, however, look ridiculously cool and charmingly edgy.

Newsboy Cap Changes the Game

Nothing says stylish quite like a well-fitted hat that brings out the personality of its wearer. Sure, glasses and eyepatches might seem convenient at first glance, but what about an accessory that raises the stakes and makes the protagonist cute to boot? While some players might want to see the four-legged wonder strutting around with a fancy top hat or a fedora, a newsboy cap will have to do for the time being.

Along with a mesmerizing fur retexture and one of the two strapping eye accessories, the "Newsboy Cap" mod will ensure that players are fully poised to tackle the challenges of a dystopian catwalk. Whether its inclusion in the protagonist's "outfit" has to do with a fashion statement or its irresistible leather finish matters little, as it is likely to steal the spotlight either way.
