The Duffer Brothers offer fans an apology for a particularly awkward continuity error in Stranger Things Season 4.

While speaking to Variety, co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer were asked about the problems created by the date of Season 4's second episode. A rolling camera shot in the episode, dated as March 22, drew questions from fans who noticed that this is also the date of Will Byers' birthday in the series continuity. When asked if the rest of the characters forgot Will's birthday, Matt Duffer answered, "The honest response is, clearly like the characters in the show, we also forgot about Will's birthday. So the debate now is whether we adjust Will's birthday or we just let it be really sad."

Will Byers, portrayed by actor Noah Schnapp, has been a prominent character since Stranger Things premiered in 2016. Will's disappearance into the Upside Down is central to the first season's storyline, and the ensuing investigation is what uncovers the sprawling conspiracy buried beneath Hawkins, Indiana. The character's birthday has been a key reference in the series previously, specifically in the Season 2 episode "The Mind Flayer." One scene from the episode sees Will's mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), remind her son of his birthday in the hopes of saving him from the Mind Flayer's control.

On the subject of the recent continuity error, Matt Duffer added, "You know how George R.R. Martin has somebody — I mean, his story is more vast — and Stephen King has someone who just keeps track of this stuff? We need that. We don't have that. So Ross and I, and my memory's not great, but we love Will, and I don't want people to think we don't love Will because we forgot — we do! But now we mentioned Dustin's birthday this season, so we're being very careful for people not to forget."

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume I premiered on Netflix on May 27. The latest season has quickly garnered a reputation as the most horrifying so far, both for its devastating new villains and unexpectedly high body count. When asked if viewers could expect a reprieve from the violence in the second half of Season 4, Ross Duffer responded, "I don't really want to say, but I would be concerned about the characters going into Volume II, for sure."

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume I is streaming now on Netflix. Volume II releases on July 1.
