Season 3 of Stranger Things was absolutely awesome, but because of the coronavirus pandemic, fans have had an extended wait for Season 4 -- but that wait is almost over. With less than two months to go, fans of the series are eagerly counting down the days until the new season's May 27 release date. In anticipation for that, Netflix just dropped a new trailer for Season 4, and it promises to be a horror-filled, Game of Thrones-like season.

Debuting a bunch of new footage, the trailer gave a great look at what's coming in Season 4. It promised a war between Eleven and the Upside Down, and it showed the return of Dr. Sam Owens. Along with that, fans got a glimpse of Hopper fighting a Demogorgon in a gladiator-like brawl. All of that clearly ups the ante for Season 4, but most fans are glossing over a crucial scene from the trailer -- a scene that might have shown Max's death.

Because she first appeared in Season 2, Max was a late-comer to "the party." At first, she was standoffish and untrusting, and she was especially skeptical that supernatural events were happening in Hawkins. However, she became a believer after seeing Dustin, Lucas and Steve fight off a pack of demodogs. Then, she didn't hesitate to join the party, and she and Lucas became a couple. In Season 3, her brother Billy was possessed by the Mind Flayer, and he helped the monster build a giant physical form. At the end, though, Billy overcame the monster's influence and sacrificed himself to save Eleven's life.

Season 4 will emphasize that Max was left reeling after her brother's death. Early in the trailer, she can be seen at Billy's grave, reading a letter about how hard the last six months had been. Some fans think that her mourning will be ill-warranted because they believe Billy will be back as a villain. Regardless, though, many fans are enthralled by another one of Max's scenes. At the 2:36 mark, Max can be seen floating above Billy's grave.

Of course, fans were all over that scene because it implied that Max would be getting powers, like Eleven. Right off the bat, it seemed like an awesome development, but there was major problem. The Duffer Brothers have explicitly said that that scene is a bad thing. In an interview with IGN, Matt Duffer was talking about the grandfather clock that keeps appearing, when he said, "And you don’t want to see the clock! If you see the clock, it’s not great. Max, unfortunately, did see the clock, and as we see her levitating later in the trailer, it doesn’t seem like that was a good thing."

Stranger Things Trailer Max Death

His words were pretty open-ended, but another scene from the trailer might offer a damning insight. At the 2:29 mark, fans can see some characters' silhouettes all huddled together. At first glance it doesn't look good, but if you increase the brightness, things become much clearer. It was Dustin and Steve standing over top of Lucas, who was holding Max.

While that one shot doesn't confirm that Max will die in Season 4, that was clearly the insinuation. Dustin and Steve's body language implied that something was drastically wrong. Yet, they weren't rushing for help. They seemed to have accepted that something bad had already happened, and they were too late to stop it from happening. Hopefully, Max doesn't end up dying in that scene, and she's only recovering from a supernatural fight. However, if she did die, it would be a great way to raise the stakes for the war with the Upside Down.
