Netflix's trailer for Stranger Things Season 4 Volume II gives fans a thrilling look at the things that await them in the Upside Down.

On June 21, the streaming giant released the trailer for the back half of the series' fourth season's final two episodes, which will collectively sport a runtime of nearly 4 hours. While the resolution to the characters' story remains a mystery, the video does suggest that one of the beloved cast will meet an untimely end. At roughly the 0:58, Robin says to Steve, "It might not work out for us this time," suggesting that death is on the horizon.

Stranger Things, created by the Duffer Brothers, debuted in 2016 to universal praise from fans and critics alike. The first season followed the mystery arising from the disappearance of young Will Byers, which soon gave way to a whole world of interdimensional horrors hidden by vast conspiracies. The fourth season has been hailed as the darkest yet, leaning more heavily into pure horror territory than the show has ever done before. Season 4 also introduced a plethora of new concepts and horrifying implications, from the monstrous Vecna to potentially changing the way time itself works in the Stranger Things universe.

Fans have already been given a sneak peek at Season 4's last two episodes, "Chapter Eight: Papa" and "Chapter Nine: The Piggyback." Executive producer Shawn Levy has previously discussed the decision to split the fourth season, saying, "We didn’t think nine episodes were going to be ready in time, and we have made the world wait long enough." He continued, "We always knew that if we could deliver the first seven, it’s such a satisfying breaking point and pay-off moment, that it’ll keep people fed for enough weeks so we can finish up Volume 2."

Levy also remarked on the admittedly darker tone of Season 4, explaining, "I was occasionally nervous that the show was going so dark, it would be off-putting to the younger viewers that have flocked to our show." He also commented on the show's innate ability to recenter itself, adding, "I think this is the superpower of the show. No matter how dark we go with Stranger Things, it's always balanced with the heart it is."

The Duffer Brothers have also given fans a hint of what to expect from the last two episodes of Season 4, and it isn't anything good. Ross Duffer answered a question regarding the episodes' body counts, saying that "I don't really want to say, but I would be concerned about the characters going into Volume 2, for sure. I hope that that is sort of the sense, because it is a darker season and the kids are no longer kids. So everybody is in danger. And there's sort of an ominous feeling that things might not go well."

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume II premieres on Netflix on July 1.
