Gaten Matarazzo, the young star who plays Dustin on Stranger Things, thinks that the upcoming fourth season of the '80s-set sci-fi Netflix series is the scariest of the show so far.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Matarazzo was asked about what he could say about the upcoming season. "Yikes," he began. "I think most would probably say it's the scariest [season] out of the previous three, which I love because it's very fun to film." Despite the scares, Matarazzo added that it was a happy environment on set. "We don't have to try too hard. We like each other, which is always a plus," he said about filming the upcoming season. "As well as having a lot of the heavy, dark stuff in the show, it’s surrounded by a lot of lightheartedness [and] a good amount of comedy... We usually have a fun time on set."

Matarazzo also talked about the return of Hawkins Chief of Police Jim Hopper, played by David Harbour, in Season 4. The status of Hopper was uncertain at the end of the third season after he seemingly sacrificed himself to close a gate to the Upside Down. However, Hopper appeared alive at a Russian prison camp in the Season 4 teaser that released in February 2020. Matarazzo revealed that Hopper’s return was not-so-surprising to him and his co-stars. "I guess most of the cast had a pretty good idea that he might be making a return, but they weren't too sure about it from the beginning," he commented. "By the time we had gotten to the table read [and] we had all started reading together, it had been pretty clear. But it was great to have it confirmed when we saw David there."

Harbour previously commented on Hopper's role in the upcoming season. "And one of the great things that you can see with Hopper is that he was a protector, he's a man of justice [and] he now has become a prisoner," he said. "He's trapped and he's isolated. And we get to see an entirely other color of him that has been hinted at."

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Priah Ferguson, Cary Elwes, Jake Busey, Maya Thurman-Hawke and Levon Thurman-Hawke. Season 4 has yet to receive a release date.
