The Season 4 finale of Netflix's Stranger Things was two and a half hours of epic action, emotional moments and dramatic circumstances in the town of Hawkins. Now, the show's creators explain why it was made as a movie-length episode.

Speaking to Collider about the Season 4 finale of Stranger Things, "Chapter 9: The Piggyback," the Duffer Brothers discussed how they had originally planned for the season's conclusion to be broken up into two parts. But the struggle to find a natural break in between episodes resulted in the longest-running time in the entire series. "I think we just couldn't find a good spot to break it because there's almost an hour of build-up tension, and then it just goes hard for an hour," Ross Duffer said. "Then we have our 25 minutes of coming down the coda. It would've just not been a very satisfying episode to stop it after that first hour. In our opinion, it just would've petered out. We didn't want to force an ending, so we just figured, well, it'll just be this monster episode. If you want to pause it, go ahead."

Unlike in the past, Stranger Things' fourth season was broken up into two volumes with the episodes having longer running times. Within 28 days of its release, Volume 1 of Stranger Things crossed 1 billion hours viewed on Netflix, surpassing records held by Ozark and Squid Game. When Volume 2 was released on July 1, it caused Netflix's servers to crash.

In discussing plans for Stranger Things' fifth and final season, the brothers previously stated it would likely be shorter than Season 4. But when asked about the possibility of another volume split in the final season, they expressed how they would be more prepared in the writing process to take that approach.

"If we were to do a split again, write more to the split," Matt Duffer said. "Write to the split, which we didn't do. We're lucky that seven had that kind of ending with the Vecna reveal, that was just fortunate. It was just extremely challenging to get seven episodes out by May. I think that was the most challenging thing we've ever faced while making Stranger Things. So if we were to do it again, I would probably make the split earlier."

Season 4 of Stranger Things is now streaming on Netflix.
