During a recent video call with a fan, Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard stated that he doesn't see new episodes of the Netflix series streaming until 2022.

"Season 4? "It should be out sometime next year, hopefully," the actor said. Keeping in mind that Wolfhard's conversation was not an official release date announcement, it still represents some of the most contemporary commentary on the status of production from anyone involved in the series.

Season 3 appeared on Netflix in 2019. A 2022 release for Season 4 would be the longest gap between new seasons of Stranger Things by far. While production started on Season 4 early in 2020, work on new episodes ground to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic and caused significant delays to its release. This was the case across the board for many movie and TV productions at that point.

Set in the 1980s, Stranger Things is a science-fiction horror television series created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix. It chronicles the adventures of a group of kids living in the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins as they deal with a variety of supernatural phenomena. At the core of everything is a girl known only as Eleven, who has incredible psychokinetic powers.

When Season 3 ended, Hopper was presumed to be dead after the defeat of the most recent threat to plague Hawkins. Joyce then moved Will, Eleven and Jonathan out of town in an attempt to find a fresh start in a new community. Little is known about the upcoming season, but the first episode is titled "Chapter One: The Hellfire Club." Marvel Comics fans will recognize that name from various X-Men titles as it belongs to a major group of villains.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Priah Ferguson, Cary Elwes, Jake Busey, Maya Thurman-Hawke and Levon Thurman-Hawke. Season 4 has yet to receive a release date.
