Netflix's fan-favorite supernatural drama Stranger Things will end with Season 5.

"Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things," co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer shared. "At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but -- as you'll soon see for yourselves -- we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

"There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes," the Duffer Brothers continued. "But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As always, we are grateful for your patience and support."

The announcement that Stranger Things will conclude with Season 5 concludes with the confirmation that the long-awaited Season 4 will premiere in two parts: Volume 1 arrives on May 27, while Volume 2 debuts on July 1.

Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things premiered on Netflix in 2016. The show centers on four friends in 1980s Hawkins, Indiana who meet a mysterious girl named Eleven with superhuman abilities and learn of an alternate dimension called the Upside Down, where one of the children winds up trapped. Season 2 premiered the following year, while Season 3 arrived in 2019. Season 4's May 2022 premiere date means fans will have gone three years in between seasons, largely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Details on Season 4 have been slow to trickle out. In November 2021, Netflix celebrated Stranger Things Day by revealing all of Season 4's episode titles and releasing a teaser trailer. Actor David Harbour also recently teased the season's four-arc structure, saying, "So, there's four... Scene 001, 002... then we came out with the Creel House. There'll be one more. So there are these storylines coursing through."

Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1 premieres May 27 on Netflix, with Volume 2 arriving July 1.
