Henry James' classic Victorian horror novel The Turning of the Screw has seen many adaptations in the 121 years since its initial publication, but Universal's The Turning is shaping up to be the most insidiously terrifying adaptation yet.

Starring Terminator: Dark Fate's Mackenzie Davis and Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard, the upcoming horror film has released its first trailer, which shows Davis' character Kate arriving at a remote estate in Maine to look after two troubled orphans. However, as Kate explores her new home and gets to know the children, she finds disturbing secrets pointing to sinister forces festering within the house.

Entering development in 2016, the film is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, with the acclaimed filmmaker interested in returning to the horror genre. Principal photography on the film took place through 2018 in Ireland, with Floria Sigismondi (American Gods) directing.

Published in 1898, The Turning of the Screw will also be loosely adapted for the second season of Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House horror anthology, retitled The Haunting of Bly Manor to reflect the novel's primary setting.
