Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers have revealed where the final season will take place.

In an interview with Collider, Matt and Ross Duffer were asked whether Stranger Things' fifth season would venture out of Hawkins, ID like Season 4 or stick close to home instead. "It's mostly in Hawkins," said Matt Duffer. "And there's a lot obviously in the Upside Down." The comment apparently settles any speculation about the show further venturing beyond its small-town Indiana main setting.

While there isn't a lot of plot information about Season 5 beyond that, the Duffer Brothers have announced that they're getting back in the writers' room this summer. "We're going to take a little vacation in July," Ross Duffer said. "And then we're going to come back. I know that the writer's room is going to start in the first week of August."

David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper on Stranger Things, also went on the record with a potential Season 5 release window. "I think we'll [shoot] next year," he said. "They're finishing writing it this year, and they need to prep and stuff, so hopefully it'll be this year." He added "it'd probably come out mid-2024, based on our track record."

Regarding the length of Stranger Things' final season, the Duffer Brothers said that you can expect shorter episodes this time around. While Season 4 had some episodes that ran for over 90 minutes, the team says they are unlikely to do that again. "We don't want [Season 5] to be 13 hours," Matt Duffer stated. "We're aiming for more like 10 hours or something. I think it's going to be longer than Season 1 because we just have so much to wrap up, but I don't think it's going to be as long as Season 4."

And as far as the streaming model goes, Netflix boss Peter Friedlander says Stranger Things Season 5 will still be released as a full season. "For the fans of Stranger Things, this is how they've been watching that show, and I think to change that on them would be disappointing," he stated. "To not give them exactly what they've been expecting -- which is Stranger Things is a seasonal experience, they go through that with them -- I think it would be an abrupt change for the member."

Stranger Things Season 4, which pits the teens of Hawkins against the monstrous psychic villain Vecna, is currently available to stream in full on Netflix.
