Dr. Brenner may still return for Stranger Things Season 5, at least according to actor Matthew Modine.

Season 4 of Stranger Things saw what looked a lot like the death of Modine's Dr. Brenner, who took a round of bullets to the back in a desert. But in an interview with Vulture, Modine suggested the villain might be back to wreak more havoc in upcoming episodes.

When asked if he believed that Dr. Brenner was truly dead, Modine said no. "Three things are curious to me," he explained. "How did he survive the Demogorgon? How did he survive One? And when Eleven tries to use her power against Dr. Brenner after blowing three guards in the air, he unflinchingly thwarts her and says, 'You didn't think it was going to be that easy, did you?'"

Modine then suggested that this could be due to Dr. Brenner having some sort of special powers. But he also admitted some of his reasons for wanting to return to Stranger Things were selfish. "I don't want to believe it's over," he said, "because I love the Duffers. I don't want to believe it's over, because I can't wait to work with Millie [Bobby Brown] again."

He's not the only character who is hoping to be brought back, either – Joseph Quinn, who played fan-favorite Eddie Munson in Season 4, jokingly stated "I'll be furious if they don't bring me back," and added, "I'd love to [return], if they'll have me."

Modine has portrayed Dr. Brenner since Season 1 of Stranger Things, which aired in 2016. A research scientist who is responsible for running experiments on characters like Eleven, Dr. Brenner is one of the main villains of the show.

While it's unclear at the moment whether or not Dr. Brenner will be returning in Season 5 of Stranger Things, audiences might find out relatively soon. David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper on the show, predicts that the new episodes will "probably come out mid-2024, based on our track record." Co-creator Ross Duffer backed up Harbour's prediction, explaining "I know that the writer's room is going to start in the first week of August."

Seasons 1-4 of Stranger Things are currently available to stream on Netflix.
