Stranger Things will make its debut in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse through an upcoming Secret Lair drop.

Announced as a part of Netflix's Geeked Week event, the partnership will see several iconic characters from the town of Hawkins translated into Magic: The Gathering cards. Wizards of the Coast has yet to reveal the full extent of the Secret Lair but did confirm that it has listened to player feedback regarding the controversial sets and will be approaching the collaboration in a different manner.

While the actual content and mechanics of the Secret Lair set have yet to be revealed, Wizards of the Coast did reveal artwork for two of the cards. One image includes a bloody-nosed Eleven using her telekinetic powers while the other is a rendition of the fairy lights used by Joyce Byers to communicate with her son, Will, while he's trapped in The Upside Down during the first season of Stranger Things,

As explained by Gavin Verhey in a video published by Good Morning Magic, Wizards of the Coast are "releasing a Secret Lair of Stranger Things cards. These cards are 'Universes Beyond', they're black-bordered and they're mechanically unique." Verhey goes on to explain that designing the new Secret Lair cards required a "great degree of caution," and confirmed that Wizards of the Coast will be printing in-world Magic: The Gathering versions of the cards in addition to the limited-edition Stranger Things versions.

"Universe Beyond" is a particular series of Magic: The Gathering cards that incorporates characters and settings beyond the game's core multiverse. Previous crossovers include The Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40,000 and The Walking Dead.

Verhey also addressed concerns raised by fans regarding Secret Lair exclusivity; many Magic: The Gathering players have criticized Wizards of the Coast for placing certain mechanical cards behind a limited-edition set. The designers have solved this problem by including copies of the in-world Magic: The Gathering cards on "The List" which can be found at a higher frequency in set boosters. This strategy fails at dispersing enough of the cards, they will be included in future sets and products.

"This way, the Stranger Things Secret Lair versions remain a special collectible that you can only get in this drop, but if what you want is to just play with the cards, we can reprint these in-world Magic versions of the cards as many times as we want in the future," explains Verhey. The in-world Magic: The Gathering versions of these cards will be available six months after the release of the Secret Lair.

Verhey also confirmed that the Stranger Things Secret Lair cards were intentionally designed to not be used in competitive constructed play. They have been designed first and foremost as a celebration of the hit Netflix series and for the Commander game mode. How the cards will function in Commander has yet to be confirmed.

Secret Lair drops are special, limited edition sets occasionally offered by Magic: The Gathering. The contents drop often celebrate some of the game's more iconic cards reimagined with artists and visual styles. Once the particular release window of the Secret Lair closes, the cards will no longer be available, making each Secret Lair a collectible for avid fans.

A release date for the set has yet to be confirmed but more information will be provided "soon."
