Even though Season 4 of Netflix's Stranger Things broke the Nielsen Streaming Record for most minutes of a show viewed within one week, it still isn't more popular than Squid Game.

According to Variety, Season 1 of Squid Game remains the most popular season of a television show ever. While Season 4 of Stranger Things racked up an impressive 1.4 billion hours viewed, the Korean survival series came out on top with 1.7 billion.

Premiering on Netflix in September 2021, Squid Game follows hundreds of contestants strapped for cash as they attempt to win a series of increasingly deadly children's games for an enormous cash prize. The catch, however, is that when a contestant is eliminated, they are also killed. Squid Game was instantly a hit with critics and audiences and Netflix approximated that audiences watched 1.65 billion hours of the show in its first 28 days on the platform.

Stranger Things Can't Win the Squid Game

By comparison, Stranger Things Season 4 totaled 1.15 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days, making it the first English language series to cross that milestone on Netflix. In fact, the second part of Stranger Things Season 4 garnered so many viewers in such a short period of time on its July 1 release date that it caused Netflix's servers to crash.

Squid Game was officially renewed by Netflix for a second season in June, though this news came after Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos claimed that "the Squid Game Universe has just begun" in 2021. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teased what audiences can expect from the next installment of the Korean survival drama. "There are people everywhere in the world offering their opinions about where the show should go," he said. "I could actually pull ideas from fans all around the world to create the next season." He added, however, that he already has a "framework" for the next season.

As for Stranger Things, a fifth season is currently in development. Actor David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper in the show, teased that the new season might be hitting Netflix sooner rather than later, but a release date has yet to be officially confirmed. "I think we'll [shoot] next year," he said. "They're finishing writing it this year, and they need to prep and stuff, so hopefully it'll be this year." He added that "it'd probably come out mid-2024, based on our track record." According to series co-creator Ross Duffer, "the writer's room is going to start in the first week of August."

The first season of Squid Game and all four seasons of Stranger Things are available to stream on Netflix.
