Before the main characters from Stranger Things could wear Ghostbusters costumes in Season 2, the show's creators had to get permission from the director of the hit '80s movie. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stranger Things creators Ross and Matt Duffer recalled how they had to speak with Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman and star/co-writer Dan Aykroyd in order to get approval.

The Duffer Brothers are big fans of the film franchise, so this was a dream come true for them. According to Matt Duffer, “[Reitman] said it was flattering. He read the scripts. He had seen the first season or at least had heard of it or pretended like he had. But they were really into being part of the show."

"Then they sent us all these Ghostbusters toys at the end of the shoot," he added. He also called Ghostbusters "one of my top 5 most worn-out VHS tapes.”
