WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Strange Adventures #4 by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, and Evan "Doc" Shaner, available now.

The worlds of Adam Strange and Green Lantern are two staples of the cosmic corner of the DC Universe. As official agents of peace and justice throughout the galaxy, the Green Lantern Corps has had a long history of contact with Adam’s adopted alien home-world of Rann, just as the Green Lanterns of Earth have a long history of contact with Rann’s Earth-born hero.

After decades of stories, it’s no wonder that these two corners of the DC Universe have overlapped so frequently, and the most recent instance comes in the latest issue of Strange Adventures by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, and Evan "Doc" Shaner. Though it isn’t the most pleasant interaction, it does highlight how Rann falls within the jurisdiction of the Green Lantern Corps. Now we’re taking a look at the relationship between Rann and the Corps and what we know about the Green Lanterns assigned to protect the planet from evil’s might.

Before asking Superman for help in Strange Adventures #4, Adam Strange asks Green Lantern Hal Jordan for a ride back to Rann. Desperate to return to his family quicker than the next Zeta Beam would allow, he hopes that his fellow Earthman will be able to transport him. Unfortunately for Strange, Jordan refuses on order of the Guardians of the Universe. Believing that Hal’s aiding Adam Strange would constitute choosing a side, the Guardians forbade him from transporting the hero, with Hal even saying that the Corps would stop both of them from making it to Rann if need be. This causes a great deal of friction between the two cosmic heroes, with Adam believing that Hal chose his duty as a Lantern over his duty as a friend and hero, but this is not the first time the interests of Rann and its hero have come into conflict with Hal Jordan specifically.

In The Green Lantern #6, by Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp, and Steve Oliff, Hal Jordan and Adam Strange find themselves on opposite sides of a duel when Hal goes undercover within Controller Mu’s Blackstars. He seemingly kills Adam, but this is really a ploy as he puts Adam into a coma to spare his friend’s life. Things don’t go exactly as Hal planned, but the two heroes managed to halt the Blackstars’ plans for Rann with the help of Adam Strange’s wife Alanna. It is in this issue that both Alanna Strange and Hal Jordan state that he is the Green Lantern assigned to Rann, as its star system is the closest to Earth’s.

Not only does this go against what fans knew of the Green Lantern Corps’ cosmic cartography, but it also disregards the duties of two fan-favorite Lanterns -- Vath Sarn and Isamot Kol -- whose inductions into the Corps are tied so closely with one of Rann’s biggest events: the Rann-Thanagar War. As a part of the buildup to Infinite Crisis by Geoff Johns, Phil Jimenez, and more,  Superboy-Prime pushed Thanagar, occasional homeworld of Adam Strange's ally Hawkman, across the galaxy into Rann’s solar system. The resulting blowback had devastating effects on both planets, leading to all-out war across nearly all of DC’s cosmic corner of its universe.

The newly reinvigorated Corps, fresh out of Green Lantern: Recharge by Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons, and Patrick Gleason, was dispatched to handle the conflict but were not allowed to fight for either side as agents of humanitarian aid. Fortunately, this war bred two of the finest Lanterns the revived Corps had to offer. As the conflict raged on, a Green Lantern ring made its way to Rann, where it found the Rannian soldier Vath Sarn fighting for his life alongside his fellow troops. At the same time, a second ring made its way onto the finger of a Thanagarian soldier named Isamot Kol, a Lizarkon from the planet Thanagr that would go on to become Sarn’s sector partner and closest ally.

Though two fought on opposite sides during the Rann-Thanagar War, both soon realized that they now served a higher call to action, going on to fight admirably for the Corps against the Spider Guild, the Sinestro Corps and even during the Blackest Night. Both have served as members of the Corps in DC’s post-Flashpoint timeline throughout the New 52 and Rebirth and appeared in The Death of Hawkman series by Marc Andreyko, Aaron Lopresti, and Livesay, in which the Green Lantern Corps once again came to the aid of Rann in this series, helping the two worlds of Rann and Thanagar ratify a peace treaty to end all hostilities and prevent yet another galaxy-wide conflict. The sector partners also appeared in Sam Humphries, Eduardo Pansica, and Roman Cliquet’s Green Lanterns series alongside Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.

While there's no indication whether the fan-favorite partners will make an appearance in Strange Adventures, Rann still has its fair share of cosmic heroes botween those Lanterns, Hal Jordan and Adam Strange, even if the later's heroic attributes have come into question.
