WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Strange Adventures #2, by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, Evan "Doc" Shaner and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

In Strange Adventures #1, Adam Strange found himself in the middle of a murder investigation. The space-faring superhero recently wrote an autobiography of his adventures on Rann, and the comic book series is examining the fine line between the fact and fiction of his account. On one hand, Strange is presented as an idealistic superhero from a bygone era. But on the other, there is also the more grounded and realistic truth that is a bit murkier. Now, a man who had publicly accused Strange of being a liar was found dead, and all the evidence points to the superhero being the killer.

However, the Justice League has sent in Michael Holt, Mister Terrific, to offer an impartial investigation. Terrific is pragmatic, and he will follow the facts -- no matter where they lead him. The case couldn't be in better hands, seeing as how Michael is famously described as the third smartest man in the DC Universe. And, in Strange Adventures #2, we find out exactly how Mister Terrific keeps his mind sharp.

Mister Teriffic

Michael Holt has always been a genius. When he was a young boy, he was already reading through the works of brilliant scientists, and he earned multiple doctorates before he ever became a superhero. After a string of tragedies -- one of which involved the death of his wife who was pregnant with their unborn child -- Holt used his great intelligence and physical prowess to become Mister Terrific after an encounter with the Spectre in his debut in 1997's Spectre #54. by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake.

To help him in this mission, Holt created the T-Spheres, small floating devices that bear his "T" insignia. These spheres are outfitted with artificial intelligence, and they follow his commands. They also have a vocal capacity and are weaponized so that Holt can use them for various purposes during his superhero activities.

In Strange Adventures #2, we learn that Holt not only uses his T-Spheres during superhero hours -- they also follow him throughout his daily life, and they play a central role in keeping his intellect in peak shape.

In fact, throughout the second chapter of the comic series, we see Holt go through his day-to-day life as he takes on the case of Adam Strange. He goes out to the store to buy Strange's autobiography, reads the book into the night, boxes at a gym, visits a shooting range, runs, trains and trains some more. Throughout all of these activities, his T-Spheres follow him around, throwing him trivia questions on any and all subject matter possible. They ask him about literature and mythology, math equations, politics, economics, anatomy, science and historical facts.

And, without hesitation, Holt gives all the answers, and they are all correct. This shows that as much as Mister Terrific trains his body, he also trains his mind to remain on top. The T-Spheres keep him on his game, and they force him to know all there is to know about everything.

This continuous training is why he's still one of the smartest men on the planet. Jumping between subjects also helps his mind to unconsciously unravel the first lie in Adam Strange's story. While the cosmic hero says that his young daughter is dead, Holt determines that Strange is lying about that tragedy.

This discovery is what prompts him to fully accept the job of investigating Adam Strange and, as Holt ominously states, he expects there are far more lies left to discover. The truth, as they say, is between the lines, and Holt might be the only person in the DCU who's smart enough to figure that out.
