'Straight Outta Compton's' Corey Hawkins Heads to 'Skull Island'

Corey Hawkins, who stars as Dr. Dre in Legendary's "Straight Outta Compton," in in talks for the studio's "King Kong" prequel "Kong: Skull Island," Variety reports.

He'll join Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson in the film directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“The Kings of Summer”), which reportedly focuses on a team of explorers who trespass on King Kong’s primordial island territory.

Written by John Gatins, Max Borenstein and Dan Gilroy, "Skull Island" recently lost co-stars Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons due to scheduling issues. Legendary is reportedly now courting Russell Crowe for one of those roles.

Hawkins, who also appeared in "Iron Man 3" and "Non Stop," will play Heath in the upcoming season of "The Walking Dead."

Originally planned for release in November 2016, "Kong: Skull Island" is now set to arrive March 10, 2017.
