WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Steven Universe Future episode "Bismuth Casual, which aired on Cartoon Network.

Steven Universe Future has quietly been concluding many of the major arcs from the series, giving the Crystal Gems the final steps in their personal journeys. While things may be stressful for Steven, the other Crystal Gems have been fully finding their place in the world. Now, it seems that two of them may find that future in each other.

While most of "Bismuth Casual" is focused on Steven and Connie's connection, it also casually sets up a new romantic relationship between Bismuth and Pearl.

BISMUTH CASUAL

The majority "Bismuth Casual", takes place at a roller rink. Steven and Connie are hanging out for the first time in a while, but Steven has been so disconnected from regular human activities that he can't seem to find a foothold while talking to Connie's new friends. At one point, Steven ends up against a wall and alongside Bismuth. The blacksmith Gem came to the rink with Steven and Connie, but she didn't exactly come for them. Instead, she came to hang out with Pearl -- who has found her center at the roller rink and uses it as the perfect place to meet humans and befriend them.

While Steven and Bismuth are talking about Steven's problems, it slowly comes up that Bismuth is specifically here for Pearl. Steven quickly susses out the fact that Bismuth has become romantically interested in her fellow Crystal Gem. Pearl seems completely unaware of this though, encouraging Bismuth to hang out with other humans instead of just her. When Steven asks about this, Bismuth openly admits that while she may be interested in Pearl, she doesn't want to jeopardize their friendship by making a move that's unreciprocated. Just seeing Pearl, who used to be a ball of stressed-out nerves, casually and confidently make friends makes Bismuth happy. By the end of the episode (and after helping Steven get over himself), Steven has set up a song for the pair to skate to, eventually leading to the pair coming together and holding hands as they go around the rink.

BISMUTH & PEARL

The classic Gem hierarchy typically kept other kinds of Gems from fraternizing with others. But relationships have grown between various Gems over the years. While some of those connections could be seen as fraternal (such as Amethyst eventually seeing Jasper as something of a sister gone off the rails), others have been more openly romantic. Sapphire and Ruby notably fell in love once they were on Earth, and their bond eventually led to the creation of their fusion, Garnet. It's interesting to see another potential romantic connection being built over the course of the episode, especially for Pearl. She previously was deeply in love with Pink Diamond, even following her to Earth when Pink transformed into Rose Quartz and carried a torch for her even after she fell in love with Greg Universe.

Part of Pearl's arc has been moving past that and becoming her own person outside of that relationship. A potential romance with Bismuth could be the perfect conclusion for that storyline, proving once and for all that Pearl has adapted to that loss. Bismuth is even allowing things to move at Pearl's pace, giving her control over if and when things move forward for the pair. It's a cute connection and could be a great romantic development for both. It's even possible that the two could get together and create a new fusion like Garnet that's based on their love. With only a handful of episodes left before the conclusion of Steven Universe Future and the series as a whole, seeing Pearl enter a relationship with Bismuth might be the perfect conclusion for the character.
