WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Steven Universe Future episode "Fragments," which aired on Cartoon Network

Steven Universe has always been a pacifist. It's been a major theme of the entire series, with Steven always trying to end the conflict by forcing people to resolve their problems instead of resorting to violence. But as Steven faces more complicated internal struggles throughout Steven Universe Future, his anger got the better of him and forced a ferocity out of him that he's never known.

During a sparring duel, Steven actually shattered one of his oldest enemies, Jasper. Although he was able to repair her Gem and save her life, the damage may have far more personal than he realizes.

WHO IS JASPER?

Jasper is was one of the most consistent villains of the early half of Steven Universe. An enforcer from the Gem Homeworld, she (alongside Peridot and the captive Lapis) was sent to Earth by the Diamonds. Jasper was a famous warrior who hated the ones who the world believed had shattered Pink Diamond. Upon encountering the Crystal Gems for the first time, she was shocked to discover that Steven had powers similar to those of Rose Quartz, the Gem said to have been the one actually kill Pink. Although Jasper almost captured him and took him back to Homeworld, Steven and his allies were able to bring down her ship and trap her on Earth.

Jasper's attempt to fuse with Lapis so she could become more powerful failed when Lapis used it as a chance to trap them at the bottom of the ocean. The two were eventually separated, and Lapis became something of an ally to the Crystal Gems. Jasper traveled the world, trying to find corrupted Gems to create a fearsome army with which she could try to bring down Steven and his allies. This became one of the recurring plots of the third season until Steven and Amythest finally got the chance to confront her once and for all.

Fusing for the first time into Smokey Quartz, the pair were able to beat Jasper in a duel. Desperate to not fail in battle against them again, Jasper tried to forcibly fuse with a corrupted Gem. All this did was spread the corruption to her, however, forcing the heroes to contain her in one of Steven's bubbles -- at least until the series finale, where Jasper is among the various Gems that Steven and the Diamonds are able to restore.

STEVEN VS. JASPER

Steven has been losing control of his powers recently, along with seeing many of his loved ones finding their own place in the world. In an attempt to try and keep away from others out of fear of hurting them, Steven ends up finding Jasper. Earlier in Steven Universe Future, Steven encountered Jasper in the woods. While the other restored Gems have made lives for themselves in Little Homeworld, Jasper remains isolated and preparing for a battle that will never come. Reasoning that no one would look for him with her, Steven goes to try and stay with Jasper. Jasper convinces Steven that what he really needs to do is train and learn to channel his negative emotions into strength. The two train together and Steven actually becomes more dangerous and battle-ready.

But during a sparring battle between the pair, Steven unleashes a new devastating move -- creating a giant wall of spikes that he crashes down onto Jasper. Doing so actually shatters her gem -- effectively killing her. It's only thanks to his healing powers and the elixirs left by the Diamonds that Steven is able to save Jasper and fix her Gem. Doing this leads Jasper to bow to Steven and recognize him as her new Diamond.

Jasper is one of Steven's most dedicated enemies. She was one of the few Gems that Steven was never able to convince to abandon her more violent ways. She remained an antagonist for her entire time in Steven Universe, and even now she's less of an ally and more of a non-aggressive former enemy. Seeing her finally bow to Steven isn't a victory for him -- it's through a show of force that he won her loyalty. This goes against everything Steven has ever fought for, making the moment one of personal defeat for the young man. This is the first time Steven has ever been so destructive and going into the finale it does bode well for him and others.

New episodes of Steven Universe Future air Fridays at 7 PM EST on Cartoon Network. The hour-long series finale will air on March 27.
