Steven DeKnight, former showrunner for the first season of Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix, has added his voice to others in Hollywood reacting to the news that James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, had been fired by Disney.

Gunn had made a number of offensive tweets between 2008 and 2012, many of them joking about subjects such as rape and pedophilia. Although the content had been deleted, it began to circulate again when right-wing opponents of the filmmaker posted evidence of the tweets. Gunn made an apology for his actions on Thursday night, but Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn announced on Friday that the company would end its business relationship with him.

Asked by a fan for his opinion on the matter, Steven DeKnight offered an abbreviated but heartfelt reply: "Been traveling all day back and forth to SDCC. Not completely caught up, but deeply saddened on all fronts. All I have for now."

DeKnight is known for his work on Pacific Rim and shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse, as well as Daredevil. He and Gunn have not worked together on their respective Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, but both have professed to be fans of each others' work.

Gunn had recently finished a draft of the script for the third movie in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. The movie was originally expected to begin filming in January for a 2020 release. An updated plan for the film has not yet been revealed.
