"My favorite comic book of all the Marvel series, was always Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos," Lang told Screen Rant in an interview promoting the film Braven. "I friggin' loved Sgt. Fury's Howling Commandos and to me it was always like, I want to be Nick Fury."

"Now, I think Sam Jackson does a great Nick Fury," Lang continued. "But, understand that the Nick Fury Sam Jackson does is Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I never got into Nick Fury when he was Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., you know, I was always the Howling Commando guy."

Lang is known for his roles in 1986's Manhunter, 2003's Gods and Generals and 2009's Avatar, in which he played the villain Colonel Miles Quaritch. Although his character seemingly died at the end of that movie, director James Cameron plans to have him return for all three Avatar sequels.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, 1963's Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #1 featured the first appearance of Nick Fury. Jackson's Fury, first seen in 2008's original Iron Man film, is based on Marvel's Ultimate Universe version -- which he actually inspired. Fury's first appearance also featured other popular characters, including Corporal Dum-Dum Dugan and other members of the Howling Commandos, who played a key role in Captain America: The First Avengers and on Agent Carter, which aired on ABC from 2015 until 2016.
