Castle Rock, which premiered last week on Hulu, has been very well-received by audiences and critics alike. The horror series, inspired by the works of author Stephen King and combining them into a single dark mystery world, has been full of little nods and references to the other works of the prolific writer. However, King believes fans should stop looking for Easter eggs and enjoy Castle Rock for what it is.

The writer posted a message of appreciation on his Twitter account towards the show while reminding fans to obsess a little less over all the references. “CASTLE ROCK is really good, each episode better than the last. But put all that Easter egg stuff aside and just enjoy it on its own terms. The cast is incandescent and they support a story worth telling.” He then followed that up with a cheeky “I can say all that because I didn’t write it. :-)”

Castle Rock centers on the sleepy Maine town of the same name. A mysterious young man is found in a hidden cell within the depths of Shawshank Prison. A criminal law attorney returns to Castle Rock (his hometown, and where he was ostracized for supposedly being involved in the death of his adopted father) to help sort things out with the so far unnamed young man. Strange happenings around the town begin to take place, deepening the mystery of the remote location. The show has been littered with references to the works of Stephen King, including callbacks to Cujo, Children of the Corn, The Shining and Pet Sematary.

Castle Rock, executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Stephen King, streams new episodes every Wednesday on Hulu. The series stars André Holland, Melaine Lynskey, Bill Skarsgård, Jane Levy, and Sissy Spacek.
