Video games across the industry have enjoyed spikes in sales and popularity now that many have found more free time. Few games require more time and effort than expansive strategy games such as those in the Total War series, and soon, thanks to Steam, enthusiastic fans or curious newcomers will be able to dive into the series easily.

It was announced that Total War: Shogun 2 will be free to keep on Steam for a limited period. From April 27 to May 1, gamers will be able to log on, download the game and play it at no cost. Additionally, Steam will also offer substantial discounts on other instalments in the series.

Discounts of up to 75 percent off will be offered for all available Total War titles and their respective DLCs, with the exception of Total War: Three Kingdoms and Rome: Total War. This offer extends only to May 4.

Developed by Creative Assembly, Total War: Shogun 2 was released in 2011 and explores 16th-century Japan. Players assume control over one of nine (excluding DLC) rival factions vying for control in a period of uncertainty following the Ashikaga Shogunate. As with other instalments in the series, Total War: Shogun 2 features large-scale battles and wider elements in a combination of turn-based strategy and real-time tactical gameplay. The game was met with critical acclaim upon release.
