DC and Warner Bros.' Static Shock film has found its screenwriter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, athlete turned filmmaker Randy McKinnon -- known for co-writing the 2020 Disney+ original film Safety -- has been enlisted to pen the upcoming Static Shock film. THR reported last fall that the DC movie was in development from producers Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin, the latter of whom directed Safety.
Created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle, the character of Virgil Hawkins/Static first appeared in 1993's Static #1, which was published by Milestone Comics, and independently-owned imprint of DC Comics. Virgil went on to star in his own animated series, titled Static Shock, which was set in the DC Animated Universe and ran on Kids' WB for four seasons from 2000 to 2004. The character was absorbed into the main DC comic book universe following the events of Final Crisis, and has since appeared on the animated series Young Justice.
Hudlin revealed a Static Shock film was in the works during the DC FanDome virtual convention in August 2020 -- two months before the reports of Jordan's involvement surfaced. A comic book writer as well as a filmmaker, Hudlin wrote September 2020's Milestone Returns #0 for DC Comics, which -- as the title implies -- signaled the return of the Milestone imprint following an extended absence.
DC and Warner Bros.' Static Shock film is produced by Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin and written by Randy McKinnon. No director is currently attached, nor is any casting information available.
