Static and the Milestone Universe introduced readers and viewers to a new type of superhuman: Bang Babies. These were individuals who were given powers by the Big Bang incident in Dakota. Their powers ranged from elemental powers like Static's, to drastically more powerful abilities, such as the power to control time.

Throughout the comics and cartoon, Static gains better control of his abilities as he faces increasingly more powerful Bang Babies with their own skills. Some of these had their roots in the comics, while others were entirely made up. Here's a look back at the toughest Bang Babies in the Milestone Universe.

Timezone

Timezone, a.k.a. Nina Crocker, was a character created for the show, though she does have some roots in the comics. She had the power to travel through time, which made her similar to the much older and darker character in the comics, Flashback. She was even named as such in the script, despite her otherwise being nothing like the character.

Her ability to travel backward and forward throughout time was an incredibly valuable asset, especially once Gear helped her control it with a modified remote. Ebon took note of this, trying to recruit her to conduct an even bigger Big Bang. She is able to use her powers to get away from him, however, and eventually uses them to travel back and reverse her own past. This keeps her from being affected by the Big Bang and removes the potential threat of her powers being used for evil.

Ebon-Streak

Static Shock Ebon Hot Streak

Ebon and Hotstreak were already both incredibly persistent opponents of Static, and their mutual hatred of him eventually resulted in their merging into Ebon-Streak. This massive mutant monster had both Hotstreak's pyrokinetic powers and Ebon's shadow and teleportation-based abilities. This allowed it to travel and appear wherever it wished, leaving a fiery path of destruction in its wake. It's also arguable that the surplus of Quantum Juice gas that Ebon and Hotstreak absorbed before they merged made their powers even stronger than normal in this combined form.

Rubberband Man

Rubberband-Man

Rubberband Man was a reinterpretation of a Milestone comic book character that acted as both an enemy and ally of Static. His real name was Adam Evans, and he was the brother of Ebon, a.k.a. Ivan Evans. After getting his powers, he briefly acted as a criminal in order to get revenge on a record producer, but after serving time, he turned over a new leaf and became a superhero.

As his name would suggest, Rubberband Man has elasticity-based powers, similar to heroes such as Elongated Man, Plastic Man and Mr. Fantastic. This allows him incredible dexterity over his body, being able to shape himself into a variety of forms. He was even able to shapeshift into a completely different person. His rubber nature also made him immune to Static's electrical powers, making it a good thing that he eventually sided with Virgil.

Holocaust/Pyre

Blood Syndicate. Masquerade. Holocaust. Milestone Comics

Holocaust never showed up in the Static Shock cartoon, but that didn't stop him from being one of the most brutally powerful Bang Babies in the original comics. Leonard Smalls, Jr. went by the name Holocaust and the more marketable moniker of Pyre, though he's more well-known by the former nickname. He was a gang leader even before the Big Bang, and once he gained his fire powers and superhuman faculties, he was a bigger threat than ever to Dakota. He was initially the leader of the Blood Syndicate gang before going off on his own.

Holocaust would really flex his incredibly large muscles once he, Static and the rest of the Milestone characters joined the DC Universe. He laid waste to Dakota in Static's absence, and it took the combined might of Static and several of the Teen Titans to stop him. In fact, relative powerhouses such as Superboy and Wonder Girl broke a sweat fighting Holocaust, who was more superhumanly strong and resilient than ever. With this amount of power, it's no wonder he never showed up in the cartoon.

Static

Static Shock feature

The most well-known Bang Baby is, of course, Static himself. His exposure to the Quantum Vapor/Quantum Juice of the Big Bang gave him a variety of powers, all of which are electromagnetic in nature. A powerful electrical aura surrounds Static, and this electromagnetism allows him to emit electricity as bolts or balls of lightning. He can also magnetize metallic objects, like that trashcan lid he uses to fly around on.

He can also manipulate technology and electrical mainframes to some extent, as well as interface with radio waves. He was resistant to being electrocuted, with mind control also being useless against him. His only real weakness was water, which would short out his power. This wide variety of abilities make him incredibly versatile, and when combined with his genius intellect, turned into him perhaps the most resilient and powerful Bang Baby of them all.
