The following contains spoilers for Static: Season One #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

Static: Season One presents a re-imagined version of Static's corner of the Milestone Universe, updated for the 21st century and ready to explore all of its social issues. And in Static: Season One #2, by Vita Ayala, ChrisCross, Nikolas Draper-Ivey and AndWorld Design, one dramatic update seemingly gives Daisy Watkins her own superpowers, which could mean that the titular hero is getting a shocking new ally.  But giving Daisy superpowers is a significantly bigger shake-up than expected, deviating from both her history in the comics and the Static Shock animated series.

The first issue in this series ended in the middle of a fight between Virgil Hawkins/Static and his classic nemesis Hotstreak that destroyed Virgil's childhood home. This issue opens with Daisy complaining about feeling dizzy, only for her hands to erupt with pulsating energy that flings her desk forward. The final panel on the page presents Daisy looking at her hands, slightly confused and awestricken by her new abilities. The rest of the comic deals with the aftermath of the previous issue, but this little teaser could mean a big change is coming for the Static universe and could possibly be setting up Daisy stepping into a more action-oriented role.

Daisy Watkins New Powers Static: Season One

Daisy Watkins was first introduced in 1993's Static #4, by Robert Washington III, Dwayne McDuffie and John Paul Leon, as Virgil's mild-mannered classmate who asked him out on a date. Virgil, still reeling from seeing his crush Frieda with her new boyfriend Larry, hesitantly accepts her offer and the two began to date on-and-off throughout the series. Static's superhero responsibilities constantly interfered with their relationship, which caused Daisy to break up with him in Static #42. She did not appear again in either Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool or the New 52 Static Shock.

She had a significant presence in the 2000's Static Shock cartoon series, where she was introduced in the sixth episode of the first season. Daisy was established as a brilliant student of the Vanmoor Institute, an elite high school for gifted children. Coincidentally, Virgil had been accepted to attend a six-week seminar at the same school. While there, the duo and their classmates were tricked into helping build technology that their teachers would later use to hunt Static. Eventually, Daisy helped Static stop the machines they had created and her parents transferred her to Virgil's school because they thought it would be safer for her. From that point on, they developed a close friendship and Daisy would become Static's main love interest throughout the series.

Daisy Static Consequences Static Shock

After her first rousing adventure with Static, Daisy became obsessed with the hero and constantly tried to get his attention. This admiration caused her to constantly get herself into trouble. In the Static Shock Season 3 episode "Consequences," Daisy was caught in the middle of a fight between Static, Puff and Onyx. During the fight, she was hit by falling debris and fell into a coma. Daisy found herself in similar situations throughout the series, but her new superpowers in Static: Season One could mean that she will no longer be powerless in the face of danger.

Considering that writer Vita Ayala has stated that they are a “huge fan of the original comics and TV show” and that artist Nikolas Draper-Ivery stated they were working to make “something that is familiar, but also very new,” Daisy could have a completely different role in Static: Season One. Many of her appearances in the comics relegated her to the civilian part of Static's life, while the Static Shock cartoon treated her like a damsel-in-distress most of the time. Her new superpowers mean that she might no longer be just a victim, but could instead fight her way out of trouble without needing Static to rescue her. If her obsession with Static continues in this series, she could also find herself fighting alongside him as equals.
