Static Stock is returning for a new season, Static: Shadows of Dakota, and he's accompanied by a new, incredible-looking costume.

DC revealed a first look at Static: Shadows of Dakota at the "Jim Lee & Friends Panel" at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) on July 22. The series is a follow-up to Static: Season One, which launched in 2021 from writer Vita Ayala and artists Nikolas Draper-Ivey and ChrisCross. Included in the preview are two character designs. The "Virgil Hawkins Street Wear" look homages the character's 1990s look while also giving him some more comfortable clothes to maneuver in, while the "Season 2 Look" shows off the character's t-shirt, shoes and hooded jacket.

DC also unveiled a first look at Static: Up All Night, a new young-adult graphic novel written by Lamar Giles (Not So Pure And Simple) with art by Paris Alleyne. Releasing in June 2023, the synopsis for Static: Up All Night reads, "Virgil Hawkins has just gone through a bad breakup. He can’t get over his ex, so his best friend Richie has an idea for how to distract him: attend a music festival in their city of Dakota. But wouldn’t you know it—his ex is in attendance. And that’s just the beginning of his troubles. In this madcap story of one night, a series of encounters and events leads to an adventure involving Super-Villains, a diner, a reluctant rapper, and a size-changing kleptomaniac, as well as Virgil’s frequent bad decision-making. The roster features some familiar faces from both the Dakotaverse and the Static Shock animated series in a coming-of-age tale about the cost of being a hero, and what’s possible when you have friends you can count on."

Created by Milestone Comics founders Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle, Static first appeared in 1993's Static #1. Static/Virgil Hawkins is a member of a group of metahumans who possess superpowered abilities. Static's powers, which he developed after being exposed to radioactive material, allow him to control magnetic and electrical pulses and energy.

Static lives inside of the Dakotaverse, a reality inhabited by a number of characters from the Milestone Universe. Other Milestone Media characters include Icon, Rocket, Hardware and more. In February, DC announced its rebooted Milestone imprint would be expanding with a new line of Earth-M Comics, which also includes the six-issue Duo limited series from writer Greg Pak, artist Khoi Pham and inker Scott Hanna.
