With another Sony State of Play in the books, it's time to once again explore all of the announcements and updates presented. For those unaware, in recent years Sony has aired Nintendo Direct style streams with showcases centering around a single game or multiple games. They're designed to update players on the latest games coming to the PlayStation platform.
The October 2021 State of Play was centered around upcoming third-party games coming to the PlayStation 5. The State of Play showcased nine different games along with an update to a beloved PS5 launch title. The presentation showed off games ranging from new entries in classic franchises such as The King of Fighters and Five Night's at Freddy's to exciting original games such as Death's Door and Little Devil Inside. While this was a rather short State of Play, there was still plenty to be excited about.
10 We Are OFK Tells The Wholesome Story Of The Fictional Indie Band OFK
We Are OFK brought with it a funny trailer showcasing the members of the fictional indie-pop OFK. The game tells an animated, interactive, story of the band, their humble beginnings, their rise, and of course their music. The trailer shows off the heightened chemistry the bandmates have with one another as well as the great writing we can expect from the ups and downs of their story.
We Are OFK will certainly excite fans of OFK's genre of music, but might not be as appealing to those who are looking for something different in terms of gameplay and music. This game is definitely one of the most fascinating showcases of the State of Play.
9 Deathverse Brings A Lot Of Personally To Its Deadly Game Show
Deathverse: Let It Die is oozing with charm. Deathverse, developed by Supetrick Games, is an arena-based multiplayer game designed in the form of a deadly game show. Players can select characters with a variety of different abilities and personalities with only one goal in mind: Survive. Deathverse has a heavy focus on close-range melee weapons including katanas and large electric fists.
The big question with Deathverse, however, is does it do enough to make it stand out in an already saturated genre? Does it do enough to get players to set aside what they're already playing to give it a shot? Time will certainly tell.
8 KartRider: Drift Hopes To Finally Give Players A True Mario Kart Rival
KartRider: Drift is another title in the long list of kart racers that have attempted to capture the same magic as the Mario Kart series, and one of many attempts that were released outside of Nintendo. The trailer showcased what to expect from KartRiders such as the characters, courses, and many of the items players can use to wreak havoc on opposing racers.
The highlight of the trailer was the robust customization options for each character and kart. This is an area that Mario Kart has been lacking in over the years, so it's great to see KartRiders recognize this as a way to set it apart from the Nintendo juggernaut.
7 Bugsnax: The Isle Bigsnax Is A Free Expansion To A Delightful Launch Title
Bugsnax was a bit of a revelation for Sony when it was released as a launch title for the PS5. Despite its charming and cute designs, it would've been an easy game to overlook had Sony not included the game as one of the system's first free PlayStation Plus offerings. By doing so, players gave Bugsnax the chance they may not have prior and found the game to be an absolute delight.
The developer of Bugsnax, Young Horses, certainly took note of this because not only is the game getting an expansive update in The Isle of Bigsnax, but it'll be released entirely for free. The Isle of Bigsnax features much larger part-big part-snack creatures that players can discover and capture.
6 Don't Be Deceived As First Class Trouble Is More Than Just An Among Us Clone
First Class Trouble is an online deduction game in a similar vein as the popular Among Us. Unlike Among Us, First Class Trouble is 3D as opposed to 2D top-down giving players a new perspective of the action that they wouldn't otherwise have had with Among Us. Players will either take the role of a Resident or a Personoid (a disguised robot). The goal of Residents is to shut down the robot production of C.A.I.N. while Personoids try to prevent residents from succeeding through traps and deception.
For PlayStation Plus subscribers, First Class Trouble will be available for free for the month of November giving players plenty of incentive to give First Class Trouble a chance.
5 Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Could Be Deserving Of A Pizza Party
The Five Night's at Freddy's series has captivated and terrorized players ever since the original game debut on PC and mobile devices in 2014. The survival-horror series about the horrors that occur during the night at the "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza" pizzeria has built up an extremely passionate fanbase over the years spawning numerous sequels, spinoffs, novels, and even an upcoming film adaptation.
The latest in the series is Five Night's at Freddy's Security Breach and is set at "Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizza Plex," which provides players with a vast setting to explore and hide from the animatronic terrors that await. The trailer showed off just how much the series has grown over the years. Is it enough to get the series back on the right track?
4 The King Of Fighters XV Is Aiming To Take Back Its Throne
The King of Fighters series is among the longest-running active series in gaming both in terms of duration and number of entries. The latest, and fifteenth, main entry of this classic fighting series is the aptly named The King of Fighters XV. KOF XV looks to recapture the series' magic after a divisive The King of Fighters XIV. KOF XV already boasts better, and cleaner, visuals than its predecessor and will also include rollback netcode, which would give players a significantly better online experience compared to previous entries. This trailer in particular showcases a brand new character in Dolores, an African hermit who utilizes ground and rock-based attacks.
With many of the genre's big hitters, such as Street Fighter and Tekken, wrapping up their latest entries and looking ahead, this provides a big opening for KOF XV to make a similar impact as Guilty Gear: Strive did.
3 Death’s Door Comes To Life On PlayStation
Death's Door was received well when it was initially released on PC and Microsoft consoles earlier in 2021. Boasting a Metacritic score of 85 on PC, Death's Door makes for an excellent and exciting addition to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Death's Door is a top-down action-adventure game with inspiration from series such as Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda.
This challenging game has players taking on the role of a crow, whose duty is to collect souls. Despite being a game about death, Death's Door contains its share of wit and humor in its writing.
2 Star Ocean: The Divine Force Could Be The Miracle The Series Is Looking For
The Star Ocean series makes its return for the first time since 2016 games Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness for PlayStation consoles and Star Ocean: Anamnesis for mobile devices with Star Ocean: The Divine Force. The Divine Force continues the series' dual-protagonist system with a story that adjusts to the choices players make throughout. The first protagonist is the merchant spaceship captain Raymond who strives to do the right thing, even if it means getting too reckless. The second protagonist is Laeticia who is the Princess of the Kingdom of Aucerius and is seeking to protect her home from an impending threat.
The Divine Force will also release for the Xbox Series X making it the first mainline Star Ocean title to release on Microsoft consoles since 2009's Star Ocean: The Last Hope. The Divine Force looks to ensure that the 25th anniversary of the Star Ocean series marks the beginning of a reinvigoration.
1 Little Devil Inside Is A Grounded Take On Monster Hunting
The final game presented in the State of Play was Little Devil Inside, and it makes a good argument for why it's the most hyped game from this State of Play. This visually beautiful game centers around Billy, who has made a career of investigating the supernatural. Billy travels the world to explore and learn all he can about unusual incidents in hopes of fully completing his encyclopedia of phenomenons. The game mixes in ordinary aspects of Billy's life such as travel, asking locals for help, and the business behind his own brand of monster hunting.
This trailer shows off the world map and examples of some of the story moments the player will get to experience, which includes random events on the world map. Little Devil Inside is sure to present an engaging story, and it's easy to be curious about what that story has in store.
