Starz Won’t Return To Camelot

Starz has decided not to renew Camelot, its big-budget retelling of the King Arthur story, for a second season.

“Due to significant production challenges, Starz has decided not to exercise the option of subsequent seasons of Camelot with our production partners Gk-tv, Octagon Films and Take 5 Productions,” the cable network said in a statement.

The more grounded take on Arthurian legend, which boasted a film-caliber cast led by Joseph Fiennes, Jamie Campbell Bower and Eva Green, premiered in early April to impressive ratings, delivering Starz’s strongest-ever opening for a new drama. But The Hollywood Reporter notes that Camelot struggled to break out in a spring cable schedule crammed with such high-profile debuts as The Killing, The Borgias and Game of Thrones.

Of course, not all of the blame for Camelot‘s demise can be placed on the stiff competition. The drama’s 10-episode season frequently staggered between sluggish and rudderless, with an impressive cast wasted on daytime soap-style melodrama set against a beautiful, and pricey, backdrop.
