Ronald D. Moore is going to have a busy TV season. In addition to his Syfy series Helix, the producer, writer and director will also be hard at work on an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books. The pilot was announced in November and was just ordered to series by Starz.

The seven-book Outlander series follows the adventures of a World War II nurse named Claire who winds up time traveling to 1743, where she's made to wed a Scottish warrior. Although she's married in her own time, Claire finds herself wildly attracted to her new husband. Adventure and romance ensue. The eighth book in the series, Written In My Own Heart's Blood, is set to bow on March 25, 2014.

Moore worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to relaunch Battlestar Galactica for Syfy. Moore will write the first season which is slated for 16 episodes. Filming is expected to begin this fall in Scotland for a 2014 debut.

"I’m very excited to have the opportunity to bring these books to life," Moore said in a statement. "Diana’s created a rich and textured world filled with intriguing characters, and I believe that Starz is the perfect home for her story. I think we’ll make something that the millions of fans of these books will enjoy and recognize as Outlander."
