Stargirl is officially moving into the genre of teen horror.

During the Virtual Media Day Panel for The CW's superhero series, showrunner Geoff Johns laid out his plans for the second season, which was given the subtitle "Summer School." The conference, which was attended by CBR and other news outlets, shined a light on the scary new direction the show is headed in for its sophomore season.

Reminiscing on his childhood fascination with films "like Lost Boys or, you know, Nightmare on Elm Street, or Young Sherlock Holmes," Johns stated that he wanted to inject some horror into the new season. He hopes to achieve this shift in tone through the introduction of supernatural comic book supervillain Eclipso, who he likened to "a Freddy Krueger or a Pennywise."

However, Johns was quick to reassure fans that he and the writers "wanted it to be the same show with the same characters that love each other and want to help each other at their core." He argued that the new storytelling angle was ultimately born out of a desire to "do something new and different and surprising" with the material.

This isn't the only new element the producers have in store for the season. Courtney Whitmore recently received an updated superhero costume, with Brec Bassinger explaining that the modifications were primarily made for her own comfort. She also revealed that her confidence wielding the Cosmic Staff has grown considerably since she began work on Season 1.

Stargirl Season 2 airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
