Long before the Legion of Doom, H.I.V.E and the Brotherhood of Evil, the Injustice Society was the premiere clan of villainy in the DC Universe. Tied of course to the Justice Society of America, the team has a very similar sense of legacy, reaching back as far as the Golden Age of comics.

The supervillain team is now set to get their first big push outside of comics on the upcoming show Stargirl, and several of the most prominent members are coming along for the ride. Here’s a look back at the history of team, who’s been a member and who will be on the show.

While the Justice Society of America defends the United States, the Injustice Society plans to conquer it. Their first course of action has each member leading an army of escaped crooks, while the Injustice Society kidnaps members of the JSA to keep them separate. This leads to the JSA being put on a mock trial by the Injustice Society and sentenced to death; however, Green Lantern disguises himself as The Thinker, and upon freeing the other heroes, they promptly defeat the Injustice Society.

The fiends’ next scheme is to steal national monuments. This is a demonstration for the American public so they could vote for the best villain and their grand theft. It's also another successful capture of the JSA, and the Injustice Society brainwashes them to become mindless automatons. However, through the intervention of Black Canary and the defection of Harlequin, the JSA comes to their senses in the nick of time to save the day.

Despite the team’s role as the arch villains of DC’s original superhero team, they only appear sporadically from the 60s and 70s. Later they reform to fight a reunited Justice Society, but they are ironically defeated by younger heroes such as Star-Spangled Kid and Power Girl.

The Post-Crisis reboot would eventually give the Injustice Society more emphasis, cementing their role as the JSA’s equivalent of the Legion of Doom and showcasing how villainy is many times a family affair. Outside of the JSA comics, additional books such as Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., Starman and The Power of Shazam! feature the team’s newest members.

The Injustice Society’s roster changes significantly over the years, though it always includes a few recurring stalwarts. The original group is made of Wizard, Brainwave, Gambler, Per Degaton, Thinker and Vandal Savage, who are later joined by Fiddler, Sportsmaster, Tigress, Icicle, Harlequin, The Shade and Solomon Grundy.

Wizard, Fiddler, Shade and Solomon Grundy return to form Injustice Unlimited, along with Dummy, Hazard and new versions of Icicle, Tigress and Harlequin. Many of these villains are children of the original members, in a dark mirror of the legacy inherent in the Justice Society of America. Injustice Unlimited’s original role is to rival Infinity, Inc., a group of the JSA’s children, who are the JSA's equivalent of the Teen Titans.

Additional evildoers who form new versions of the Injustice Society include Johnny Sorrow, Count Vertigo, Geomancer, Blackbriar Thorn, Killer Wasp, The Rival, Shiv, Kestrel, Rag Doll and Black Adam. Johnny Sorrow’s most recent Pre-Flashpoint incarnation has a particular vendetta against Stargirl, making the team’s appearance in her show all the more logical.

The roster on Stargirl includes Brainwave, Tigress, Sportsmaster, Icicle and Dragon King. Solomon Grundy is also set to make an appearance, and character breakdowns suggest that Cindy Burman, Dragon King’s daughter, will take up her role from the comics as Shiv. If the show is successful, the Injustice Society will likely see additional members from the comics being added, continuing the threat and legacy of DC’s original supervillain team.
