Stargirls Justice Society of America continues to grow with the announcement that Henry Thomas has been cast in the DC Universe series as Dr. Charles McNider, also known as Dr. Mid-Nite.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the Golden Age surgeon “is a brilliant and forward thinking pioneer, and a founding member of the JSA. With his trusty owl, he acts as the team’s resident doctor and detective.”

Although an accident rendered him blind, McNider discovered he retained his sight only in the presence of perfect darkness and created a special visor which enabled him to see completely. Equipped with his trademark “black out bombs” and a trained owl named “Hooty,” he became a costumed vigilante and was a member of the JSA and All-Star Squadron.

Henry Thomas, famous for his role as Elliot in Speilberg’s E.T., has appeared in Better Things, Sons of Liberty, Haunting of Hill House and Gerald’s Game.

This will be the second live-action portrayal of Dr. Mid-Nite on the small screen. Portrayed by Kwesi Ameyaw, the character appeared on Legends of Tomorrow in their incarnation of the JSA from the 1940s. The character has also made cameos in Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the latter voiced by Corey Burton.

Thomas will join Brec Bassinger, who plays Stargirl; Lou Ferrigno Jr., who will portray Hourman; Brian Stapf, who fills the olre of Wildcat; and Joel McHale, who was cast as Starman. Yvette Monreal, Christopher James Baker and Anjelika Washington are also attached to the series, but their roles have not yet been revealed.

According to the show's official description, Stargirl will inspire "an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past," and the show will feature a new take on DC's first super team, the Justice Society of America. Given the Society's large roster and numerous villains, these unconfirmed actors could end up portraying any of a number of established DC characters on the show.
