Courtney Whitmore, Stargirl's civilian alter ego, was created by Johns and Lee Moder and debuted in July 1999's Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #0. She is based on Johns' real-life sister, who was a victim of the TWA Flight 800 crash of 1996. Stargirl would later join up with the Justice Society of America.

Brec Bassinger plays Courtney Whitmore on the live-action Stargirl series. It initially debuted on DC Universe, but will move to The CW for Season 2.
