Stargirl may be ending with Season 3, but the DC show intends to go out on a high note.

"Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons," executive producer Geoff Johns told The Hollywood Reporter after news of its cancelation broke. Citing the recent cancelation of multiple Arrowverse shows this year, he acknowledged, "With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure."

Johns also thanked Stargirl's cast and production team for bringing his character -- who first appeared in the 1999 comic Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. -- to life, singling out Brec Bassinger for her performance as Courtney Whitmore. "Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I'm beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons," he continued. "Most series never get this far. We couldn't be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built!"

The DC writer later expanded upon his press statement via Facebook, revealing, "When I originally envisioned STARGIRL, I had a three season 'trilogy' in my mind so to be able to complete that trilogy and end on a true ending for the series is an absolute gift." On whether he planned more Stargirl storylines in advance, Johns wrote, "we had other JSA ideas brewing, but we knew the writing was on the wall when the Network was up for sale, so we planned accordingly to deliver an ending for us and for the fans that would have complete creative closure in the best possible way."

Stargirl and The CW's Arrowverse

Though its characters were briefly featured during Crisis on Inifinite Earth's final episode, Stargirl never officially crossed over with the primary Arrowverse timeline. However, its Season 2 episode, "Summer School: Chapter Nine" saw The Flash's John Wesley Shipp reprise his Jay Garrick role as the Flash of Stargirl's original Justice Society of America.

Stargirl is the latest CW superhero show to be canceled following Nexstar's aquisition of The CW. Prior to the sale's announcement, The CW canceled Batwoman, Naomi, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow between April and May and, despite renewing The Flash, confirmed in August that Season 9 will be The Flash's final season. With Stargirl set to end in December, Superman & Lois remains The CW's sole uncanceled DC show on air, though its renewal status after Season 3 remains unknown. Other DC shows still in development include Gotham Knights and Justice U, the latter starring David Ramsey's veteran Arrowverse character John Diggle.

Stargirl debuts new episodes Wednesdays at 8 pm ET on The CW and the next day on The CW app.
