WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite," the latest episode of Stargirl.

Stargirl just reintroduced Charles McNider, aka Doctor Mid-Nite. Sort of.

In "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite," Beth Chapel accidentally stumbled across Mid-Nite's goggles when she visited Courtney Whitmore at home. She put them on out of curiosity, only to be greeted by McNider's voice. She soon discovered the voice was part of an advanced AI system and affectionately began to call it "Chuck."

Last week, Beth overheard Courtney call Yolanda by her real name as they fled Blue Valley Hospital. At that moment, Beth left the hospital after visiting her mother and caught sight of Courtney and Yolanda in their costumes as Stargirl and Wildcat. When she heard Courtney say Yolanda's name, she set out to investigate, which led her to the Whitmore-Dugan residence.

As she waited for Courtney to come home, Beth saw Mike's dog Max chewing on a pair of goggles. She chased him up the stairs and retrieved them, then checked out Courtney's room. Suddenly, the goggles made a static noise, which prompted her to put them on. "Good afternoon. Do you require assistance?" a voice chimed in her ear.

Beth was alarmed at first, then curious, especially when the goggles were able to spout off information about her. In response to her cry that he knew everything, the AI replied, "I don't know everything, but I can provide information on a vast library of subjects, which I have access to via the Justice Society data banks."

"You are hearing the voice of Dr. Charles McNider," he continued. When asked why he referred to himself in the third person, he added, "I am merely an AI of Dr. Charles McNider, but I can change my settings and speak in the first person, if you like." Beth insisted he didn't have to change the setting, but added that she would like to start calling him Chuck.

"These things are like Wikipedia on rocket fuel!" Beth told Courtney when she came home. As Courtney demanded the goggles back, Chuck revealed more information about himself to Beth. "I am able to shift into various spectrums, including X-ray, infrared and night vision," he said. The settings also included a lie detector, weather predictor, Twitter, hologram and the default "optical" setting.

This lie detector setting allowed Beth to see right through Courtney, who tried to play the goggles off as something invented by her stepfather Pat. "False. These were invented by Dr. Charles McNider after he lost his sight fighting the mob," Beth shot back. "They helped a blind man see!"

From there, the goggles pointed them in the direction of Rick Harris, who became the new Hourman by the end of the episode. Chuck revealed Rick's name is actually Rick Tyler and that he is the son of Rex Tyler, the original Hourman. This information helped Courtney convince Rick to join their new Justice Society of America, albeit begrudgingly.

Additionally, the AI was able to reveal the true cause of the Tylers' deaths. With its hologram setting, the goggles projected footage of Solomon Grundy leaping onto their car, which sent it careening into the tree that killed them. At the time of writing, it is unclear how Chuck was able to obtain this footage.

What's more, Chuck detailed the subsequent coverup following the Tylers' crash. "The police report said a faulty tire that had been recalled blew out and caused the crash," he explained. "But the recalled tires were never made for the make and model of the vehicle they were driving." Even more damning, he showed the "recalled tires" were made by Blue Valley Tires, which is a company owned by Jordan Mahkent and the Injustice Society.

In creating an AI with a realistically human voice, McNider begs comparison to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Tony Stark. After all, Stark used his own AI -- called Jarvis, after the Stark family butler -- as part of his Iron Man suit. Whenever he donned the armor, Stark would hear Jarvis' voice in his ear, much like Beth does when she wears McNider's goggles. If "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite" is any way to judge, Chuck will quickly prove himself to be just as useful to Beth as Jarvis was to Stark.

DC Universe's Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore (Stargirl) and Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan (S.T.R.I.P.E.). The series airs Monday on DC Universe and Tuesdays on The CW at 8 pm ET/PT.
