The CW's acclaimed DC television series Stargirl shot two endings for its Season 3 finale -- one to be used if the show was canceled, and another to be used in the event of a Season 4 renewal. Of course, Stargirl has indeed been canceled. However, series lead Brec Bassinger has suggested that Season 3's alternate, "uncanceled" ending may see the light of day after all.

"Yeah, so, [series creator and co-showrunner Geoff Johns] said he -- I hope I'm not... whatever -- he said he might end up releasing it on the DVD. He doesn't know. I hope he does, though. But it will make people sad, because the fourth season idea was insane," Bassinger said during an appearance on The Wayne Ayers Podcast.

"Like, it would've been... It just would have been epic, like on a whole different level," she continued. "And I actually believe that's why it took so long for us to officially get the cancellation news, because everyone wanted this fourth season to be made, because it was... Geoff came in with such a wonderful idea, and that's why I think everyone really fought for it. But, you know, it just... It wasn't meant to be, and it is what it is. But... I hope he does [release the alternate ending], because I think... I don't know. Maybe. I don't know. I have no power with that. But I think there is a world where people get to see or find out about it."

DC's Stargirl Reaches Its End on The CW

Stargirl originally premiered on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service in May 2020, with new episodes airing next-day on The CW. The series stars Bassinger as the DC superhero Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, who was originally created by Johns, Lee Moder and David S. Goyer. Bassinger is the third person to play the character in live-action, following Britt Irvin on Smallville and Sarah Grey on DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Stargirl's Bassinger-led solo series jumped exclusively to The CW for its second season, which premiered in August 2021. Season 3 followed suit one year later. Season 3's 11th episode, "Frenemies - Chapter Eleven: The Haunting," airs tonight, Nov. 16, on The CW. The season's 12th and penultimate episode, "Frenemies - Chapter Twelve: The Last Will and Testament of Sylvester Pemberton," airs on Nov. 30. The series finally is currently scheduled to air on Dec. 7.

Despite Stargirl's cancellation, Johns has assured that Season 3 gives the show a proper ending. "Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons," the creator recently told The Hollywood Reporter. "With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure."
