The Stargate franchise began with the Stargate film, directed by Roland Emmerich in 1994. It chronicled a military operation that discovered a "Stargate" -- an ancient device that could create wormholes to other points in the galaxy. The film starred Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil and James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson.

Stargate: SG-1 takes place a year after the events of the film, with "SG-1" referring to the military unit that the main characters belong to. They utilize Stargate technology to travel to other dimensions and battle alien forces such as the Goa'uld, who take the form of various deities in Earth's history. The cast included Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks, who took over the roles of O'Neil and Spader respectively.

Stargate: SG-1 ran from 1997 to 2007, with a total of 10 seasons and 2 spinoff films. It also gave birth to several spinoff series, including Stargate: Atlantis and the animated Stargate: Infinity. Many science fiction actors, including Jewel Staite (Firefly) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) eventually joined the franchise.
