Hit farming simulator Stardew Valley has garnered a massive community since its release in 2016. It still draws in players with an incredibly addictive gameplay loop, charming characters, and one of the most relaxing soundtracks in recent memory. The characters in the game sometimes have complicated relationships with each other, as they've all lived in the same town together for years before the player's arrival. This has led to a number of intriguing fan theories, including the paternity of the game's most popular potential love interest, Abigail.

As players get to know each villager and build their relationships, they learn more and more about them. While most in-game relationships appear to be equally laid-back and free from the drama of real-life human interactions, there are moments of dialogue that seem to hint at darker events unfolding behind the scenes. Of all the mysteries and theories those clues have inspired, the idea that Abigail's real father is actually the Wizard has so much supporting evidence that it can hardly be labeled as a theory any longer. Here's a look at the evidence all but confirming the Wizard is Abigail's father.

Updated on January 21, 2024, by Andrea Sandoval: Stardew Valley is known for its tendency to leave interesting and chaotic Easter Eggs around the game for the player to discover. A lot of these don't affect the storyline or the player's life in Pelican Town, but they are exciting to find. From Lewis and Marnie's affair to the multiple pranks, players can play on the Major with his shorts to the mystery of the alien capsule, there are many interesting arcs throughout Stardew Valley. One of them involves Abigail and the Wizard as several things in the game hint that the Wizard might be Abigail's biological father. We updated this article to comply with CBR's new formatting style as well as add more information about these characters.

Why Abigail is Stardew Valley's Best Partner
Stardew Valley has 12 romanceable NPCs, but Abigail is the easy choice for the best lifelong farming partner. Here's why.

Abigail lives in the back of Pierre's General Store with her parents, Pierre and Caroline. Her parents come off as relatively normal townspeople, but Abigail has an affinity for all things supernatural and adventurous. She also seems to be overly interested in the occult. This could potentially be a trait she inherited from someone in her family, or her own unspoken desire to find some connection with her real father.

Some of her mysterious behavior definitely suggests there's more to Abigail than meets the eye. First and foremost, she can often be found wandering around in the graveyard, which gives her an air of macabre mystery that is often tied to the mystical and magical lifestyle of a wizard. Most players are also a little shocked the first time they give Abigail a piece of amethyst or quartz, only to find that she (apparently) eats it whole, and it doesn't stop there. She is notorious for eating the gifts she likes, even diamonds, which definitely provokes questions.

Stardew Valley's Creepiest Moment Occurs When the Player Abandons Their Children
Stardew Valley gives players the choice to turn their children into doves. However, this also triggers one of the freakiest events in the game.

There's nothing wrong with being unique, but Abigail is so different from her parents that it's difficult to believe there isn't something, or someone, else influencing her odd behavior. Even her physical appearance is enough to provoke questions, with Pierre remarking on it from time to time as the player's relationship with Abigail grows stronger. While her mother, Caroline has green hair, Pierre's hair is sandy brown, a combination that would definitely not produce the bright purple hair their daughter sports.

Abigail does confess to coloring her hair purple, but she has not dyed it in so long she can't even remember the last time. Almost magically the color remains. Abigail even mentions it's been a long time since she dyed her hair, but it's remained the same shade of purple. Perhaps her real father's genes are finally starting to show. Whether coincidence or further proof that she is definitely not Pierre's daughter, the Wizard is the only other person in town with purple hair. Interestingly enough, her potential connection to the Wizard doesn't stop there.

Hints Suggest The Wizard Is Abigail's Father

Not Completing Stardew Valley's Silliest Side-Quest Unlocks Hilarious Secrets
Mayor Lewis' missing shorts might seem like a simple side-quest, but Stardew Valley actually hides a lot of different uses for the unique quest item.

Although it's never explicitly stated in-game, there are several snippets of dialogue that seem to at least suggest that the Wizard is Abigail's real father. While getting to know Caroline, she tells the player that when she first moved to Pelican Town she would often sneak off and take walks down by the Wizard's secluded tower. She kept the visits secret from Pierre, because of his jealousy issues, but maybe he did have an actual reason to be jealous.

Even Pierre questions whether he's really Abigail's father because he doesn't think she resembles him. However, he's afraid to broach the subject with Caroline. Pierre's constant insecurity about not really being Abigail's father contributes to their strained father/daughter relationship. It's almost as if Pierre is hyper-focused on all the ways Abigail is different from him, only further heightening his suspicions about her true paternity.

Players who romance Abigail may also find a few hints of their own. While getting closer to her, they will discover that many of her heart events lean toward the more adventurous side of things. Life in Pelican Town tends to be reserved and laid back, but she craves the extraordinary. She will also confess to visiting the Wizard's tower on the edge of town after feeling mysteriously drawn there for reasons she can't put her finger on.

Why Players Keep Coming Back to Stardew Valley
With its addictive gameplay loop and loveable characters, Stardew Valley is the game that keeps farming sim fans coming back for more.

The most damning piece of evidence comes from the Wizard himself, who confesses that one of Pelican Town's residents may be his long-lost daughter. He never goes into further detail, but that comment, paired with his implied secret affair with Caroline, all but confirms the Wizard is indeed Abigail's biological father.

While developer ConcernedApe hasn't commented on the theories surrounding Abigail's parentage, in March 2020 he responded to a tweet confirming there are still secrets in Stardew Valley that fans have yet to uncover. Although it's uncertain whether that's about the Wizard's long-lost daughter or to one of the myriad other questions surrounding the game's events and characters, it at least proves there are still mysteries hidden in Pelican Town

There is plenty of evidence supporting the theory that Abigail is the lovechild of a secret affair between Caroline and the Wizard, to the point it's become a widely agreed-upon truth within the Stardew Valley community. Even if it's revealed to have been some clever misdirection, and Pierre has been Abigail's biological father the whole time, Caroline is still going to have some serious explaining to do because it all points out to her at least having an affair with the Wizard at some point.
