Stardew Valley's previous two updates have brought lots of changes and new content to the game, keeping the popular farming sim fresh for fans. According to the game's creator, ConcernedApe, free content update 1.5 is on the horizon, though just when it will release isn't exactly clear. Still, here are some of the things we'd like to see come to the valley.

Improved Festivals, Dialogue and Contributions to the Town

The festivals in Stardew Valley are fun events that change up the players in-game routine. They’re a great break in gameplay but after you’ve been to them once, you’ve seen it all. There’s no change year to year in events or dialogue. This was standard in older Harvest Moon games but we’re in the future now with Stardew and it would be nice to know how to become the Flower Queen or why Haley always wins this unknown competition. The game could potentially link winning this competition to growing flowers or a series of contests that take place each year before the event.

The same could be said for most festivals (the exception being the Night Market). Why not have a change-up in the Hallows Eve maze or snowball fights during the Festival of Ice? The competitions like the Egg Hunt and Fishing Contest could have random prizes after the first win like when the player receives a random gift during Feast of the Winter. Even just a change in the NPC dialogue during festivals based on friendship level would be refreshing to see.

Another area that could use an update is improving the town. When the Community Upgrade for Pam’s house was added it was a nice touch to see the town evolve. Update 1.4 also added an event to beautify the town by feeding a large raccoon (Trash Bear) who would then clean up some of the areas in the Valley. Seeing more ways the player can update the town, even something as small as putting a flowerpot in, would be a great addition. Helping plant flowers in the town in spring and summer alongside Evelyn could be a fun, new way to build up her relationship. A ramp could also be built for George to get into the saloon and the player could see him there occasionally as a change in his routine. The changes could go through Mayor Lewis, giving him more of a mayoral role than he has.

Exterior House Customization and New Areas

Players have near endless options to choose from when decorating the inside of their farmhouse, but the same can't be said of the outside. It’s the same brown and red house no matter the upgrade. It would be nice to see Robin sell different roofing options or paint colors to change up the player's house and make it part of their unique farm. If you can have a graveyard in front of your house, you should be able to have your home match.

Another interesting option would be to decorate the exterior as main seasonal festivals draw near. The Egg Festival could have egg decorations in the windows or Spirits Eve could have those cheesy paper cats and pumpkins on the walls. Those would be a fun seasonal option. The items to decorate could even be purchased during these festivals. The Night Market already sells Candy Cane and Gravestone items, why not have house decorations too?

As for the outside world, Stardew Valley is beautiful and quaint, but it would be nice to travel and see what else is in the area besides a desert. There could be neighboring towns and a market to send goods. Other places are mentioned by the townspeople like Grampleton and the Fern Islands, but we never hear about how to get there. If you look at the in-game map you can see there is a road heading north and it would be interesting to know if it goes somewhere besides the city. There could be another neighboring town where players interact with townspeople or even, potentially, a rival. This might also mean additional festivals to visit. This could be accessible via a community upgrade to the old train station. The possibilities are endless if Stardew Valley opens up its world.

Adjusting Difficulty and More Lore

If you’ve played Stardew Valley multiplayer, then you know about the Profit Margin option when creating a new farm. It lets you choose how difficult making money will be and by how much. Having this in single-player would give Stardew farming veterans a new challenge while completing the many tasks in-game and those to come. Other difficulty options such as how hard monsters are or how many spawn would be refreshing to the player who absolutely slays this game. There are mods out there that do these things, but it would make things easier for those who don’t want to alter game files if it was built in.

Lore is also important to the game. There are a lot of little tidbits about the bigger world and its history throughout the game, from dwarves and shadow people fighting to a passing comment about elves once being master crafters. There is a lot of potential to have more quests related to uncovering lore or special items, such a magical beanstalk into the clouds. Mr. Qi has also remained a pretty major mystery, so Stardew Valley could delve more into his story and his reason for hanging out on the 100th floor of the Skull Cavern.

Although it's possible none of these updates will ever make it into the game, ConcernedApe has, historically, added some good and interesting content to Stardew Valley, so he might have something in mind that's even better than what we have on this list.
