The small, green Jedi master is one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars universe. Fans love his style of talking and his wise sayings. Yoda had trained the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker himself. He was introduced to viewers in The Empire Strikes Back and passed away in Return Of The Jedi.

The 900-year-old Jedi master appears in other movies in the prequel and sequel trilogy, as well. Yoda provides Luke with a fundamental understanding of what being a Jedi means and how the dark side could tempt him. Here are some of the wisest things Yoda has said.

10 "Wars Not Make One Great"

When Luke comes looking for a great warrior, Yoda makes this pointed comment. Yoda has been alive for a very long time and has seen a great many things over the course of his lifetime. So, when he says that wars don't make someone great, it is filled with a lot of meaning. It comes with an understanding of the people he's seen, and the actual wars he has fought and his strong conviction about what is right and wrong.

9 "If Once You Start Down The Dark Path, Forever It Will Dominate Your Destiny"

Yoda has seen what has happened to Anakin. He has been training Jedi for a long time, and he knows all about the temptations and the seductive quality of the dark side. Yoda tells Luke that it is impossible to turn away from the dark side. He tells him that once he turns to the dark side, it becomes his destiny and there is no way of returning from that. This is Yoda's well-advised warning to Luke.

8 "When 900 Years Old You Reach, Look As Good You Will Not"

One of the more light-hearted quotes in the list, Yoda is nearing his end in Return Of The Jedi. He's even more frail and weak here than he was when he was introduced in The Empire Strikes Back. But, Yoda points out to Luke that he will probably not look as good when he becomes as old as Yoda was.

This is also the first time viewers get to comprehend the actual length of Yoda's existence and the breadth of his experience.

7 "Decide You Must How To Serve Them Best"

Luke is in a rush to rescue Leia and Han because he feels that they are in trouble. But, in doing so, he has to leave his training incomplete. Yoda presents before him his options: he can either stop his training and go save them for the time being, or he can continue his training and be useful for the bigger cause they were struggling for. It's a very big conundrum, and Yoda says that Luke must decide how best to help his friends and decide what they actually need.

6 "Anger, Fear, Aggression. The Dark Side Are They"

Yoda points out the exact emotions that are closely connected to the dark side. Anger, fear, and aggression are ugly emotions that lead to violence and cause people to court for power. To be a Jedi is to be passive and calm, the very opposite of the things mentioned. Yoda warns Luke not to give in to these emotions and to not let himself be seduced by these emotions of the dark side.

5 "A Jedi Uses The Force For Knowledge And Defense, Never For Attack"

Yoda pinpoints exactly what a Jedi should use the Force for. He says that they must never use this power for anything other than the purposes of knowledge and defense. To use it to attack people and to use it for uncalled violence was against the Jedi ways.

These are some wise bits of knowledge about the Jedi ways that he imparts to Luke over the course of his training. Of course, he doesn't exactly adhere to his own teachings during the Clone Wars saga.

4 "You Must Unlearn What You Have Learned"

Jedi training usually starts when they are a lot younger than Luke is. This means that Luke has already imbibed certain traits and characteristics that aren't necessarily the ways of a Jedi. Hence, Yoda asks him to unlearn what he has learned already. In order to be trained to be a Jedi, he needs to let go of a lot of things that came to him naturally, and he had to learn new ways, new perspectives, and new understandings of things.

3 "Pass On What You Have Learned"

This is yet another important lesson that Yoda imparts, and later in the sequel trilogy, viewers see how Luke himself becomes a Jedi master training Ben Solo and Rey. It is the sacred duty of a Jedi to impart their knowledge, to teach whoever requires to be taught and train the next set of Jedi. Yoda passes away after reminding Luke of his duty to pass on his training and learnings.

2 "Always In Motion Is The Future"

Luke is in a rush to go save his friends, Leia and Han, who are being held hostage in order to lure him to Vader. He can feel the immense need to go to their rescue because he feels like they're in incredible trouble. He knows that the Force is allowing him to feel these things and that Yoda can also feel this.

He asks Yoda to look into the future to see if they are in mortal danger, but Yoda very wisely says that it is not possible because the future is always in motion, and it is impossible to predict what can happen because of this constant motion of things.

1 "Do Or Do Not. There Is No Try."

One of the most iconic lines by Yoda in the franchise, this is probably one of the most quoted lines in Star Wars, as well. Here, Yoda makes clear how he believes that to simply "try" is a negative approach. One must be determined to do something, to accomplish something. To merely try is almost like just attempting something half-heartedly, and this should not be how things are done according to Yoda.
